Room 2. It looked like the closest one to where I was standing at the moment. Also, it looked like the lights might still be on. The other rooms looked very dark to me. So I went up to the door and knocked. A shy voice called out from the other side.
“Who is it?”
“Dude, it’s me, Kevin. We met each other at dinner.”
“Oh, right… Kevin. Just a moment.”
The locks made their mechanical noises as Jeremy turned and pulled each one. Then the door opened. Jeremy stood there, wearing a t-shirt and gym shorts. I hadn’t had the chance at dinner to get a good look at him, but he looked like a teenager, probably in the awkward stages of puberty. He had messy brown hair and a face that had been victimized by acne. He was pretty slightly built and was a few inches shorter than me. But he had a friendly smile, and a look of confidence in his eyes that indicated to me that he was older, or maybe just wiser, than he looked, so I felt at ease when he invited me inside.
“So, what’s the matter, Kevin, can’t find your room?”
“Yes… but how did you know?”
“The same thing happened to me the first time I stayed here. Room 6?”
“Yes…”
“Yeah, I never found it, so I ended up coming to this same room, and the guy staying here let me spend the night. I’d be glad to let you do the same.”
“Oh, thanks… that’s kind of weird, though, to have a room that no one can find…”
“Yeah, but I guess that’s how things work here.” Jeremy went to the door and started locking it again. “In fact, staying here last month was the greatest thing that ever happened to me.”
“Really… why is that?”
“Oh, I’ll hold on to that story for later.” Jeremy began to open the curtains, basking in the emerging moonlight. “I knew you were the one that would be coming here tonight. I was only afraid that the fog would keep the moonlight from shining through. But it looks like it will be a perfect night after all.”
