Sarah burst out laughing. "Ha! Your age again? Sure. I mean, that's what I was just saying." She slipped her phone into her pocket and leaned towards the little girl. Her voice was conspiratorial, a joking whisper. "Can you help us out with that?"
The girl didn't smile back. "You think I'm kidding."
Sarah leaned back again and pushed her long brown hair back, too. "No, no," she insisted, clearly not serious. "I'm sure you're not kidding. Can you do magic? I know tons of kids who can do magic."
The kid wasn't biting. She set her pink backpack down on the ground and stuck her hands in her pockets. "I can help you. Just tell me who's first."
"Who's first... ?" I looked sideways at Sarah. I didn't want to be mean to this poor kid, but Sarah looked as though she was having a little too much fun with this. Her long legs crossed over one another, she pointed over to me. "He'll decide. Go ahead, Chris. Who first?"
