After Adam was sure the monstrous creature was subdued, he ran over to Mary Lou's position on the floor by the wall. "Evelyn, Evelyn, are you okay? Evelyn, can you hear me?" he said.
Slowly, Mary Lou opened her eyes, and saw a strange human in front of her. She thought she recognized him. He looked like the male that entered her enclosure with Mary. She guessed it was her mate.
"Yeah, " she said slowly and with some difficulty. Her mouth felt strange to her. It was too small, and everything seemed to move. "I'm okay. Just a little dizzy."
She looked over the human, carefully examining him. He was tall for a human, over 6 feet, with broad shoulders, a fit, toned body, and short brown wavy hair. Looks pretty good for a human, I guess, she thought , and felt a strange stirring in her groin. The male had a strange small light in his hand, and was shining it in her eyes. She tried to bat it away.
"Evelyn, listen to me very carefully. What day is it?" he said quickly. The question confused her. She didn't know what day it was - she had heard humans discussing different times of daylight as days, and gave them strange names, but each day seemed the same as the next to her, so she didn't bother to learn them. She just shook her head at him.
"Where are we?" he asked. She did not know the answer to that question either. She knew she was in a prison for animals that humans called a zoo. She knew the humans who worked here were called zoo staff or zookeepers. But she had heard the humans using a longer name, proper name for the zoo she had never bothered to learn. She simply shook her head again.
Adam sighed. Mary Lou knew this was some type of human test, and she felt that she was failing it somehow. She had to get the next question right.
"Evelyn, do you know who I am?" he said slowly.
Mary Lou silently cursed. She should know this. She was sure she had heard Evelyn say her mate's name. Was it in her enclosure, or maybe when they were talking after they transformed?
Suddenly she remembered. "Adam, your name is Adam and you are my mate, I mean, boyfriend, " she said confidently.
"Oh, thank God, " said Adam, happily. Mary Lou was happy, too. Evidently she had passed his test. "Evelyn, I think you've had a concussion. That's why you're having trouble remembering things. We need to take you to a hospital, to see a doctor."
Mary Lou didn't know exactly what a concussion was, but from what Adam had said it may be the excuse she needed to explain why she didn't know very much about Evelyn's life.
I need to thank Evelyn for throwing me like that, thought Mary Lou. She just made this deception a whole lot easier. Maybe I'll bring her some of my favorite food tomorrow - raw deer meat.
"Evelyn? Did you hear me? Do you understand what I said?" said Adam, bringing Mary Lou back to reality, and out of her thoughts.
"Yes, dear, I understand. But no doctors! I just want to go home and rest. Can we just get out of here? I feel like I've been trapped here my whole life!" said Mary Lou with a smile.
