Sitting on a set of steps was a little girl who looked like she was on the verge of crying. She was wearing torn up clothes and looked to have a few bruises.
Jeanie felt this girl's sadness in waves. "Whoa", she thought, "That girl needs help pronto!" She went up to the little girl and gently put her arm around her. "What's wrong, Sweetheart?" she asked.
"My name's Annie, and my parents hate me." she answered as Jeanie let him cry into her clothes, which already consisted of a pink t-shirt and jeans with stylish shoes.
"Shh, it's ok", said Jeanie as she tried to calm the poor girl down. She felt really sorry for the girl. She couldn't imagine why anyone would hate an adorable child like this, she had been wanting one of her own for thousands of years. "Well, I'm sure that's not true."
Annie shook her head no. "My daddy said that I should never have been born and mommy just ignores me while she goes out to party." Annie coughed for a moment and Jeanie took a closer look at the girl. She had cuts on her arm and a black eye.
"Who's been hurting you?"
"My daddy. He keeps getting angry and hurts me. Says I shouldn't show myself."
Jeanie took a look into the girl's mind and learned that she was telling the truth. Her mother was cheating on her husband and ignoring Annie while the father was an alcoholic. And... Annie was running away. Jeanie's heart broke so hard that the sound of glass cracking could be heard. She immediately wrapped her arm around Annie, tearing up.
"Oh, you poor thing", she said. "You've been through so much." She pulled a handkerchief out of thin air and wiped Annie's tears. Suddenly, a light bulb went off above her head (literally) as she gasped. She had always wanted a child of her own and this girl could use a new family. "I know what to do. How about I be your new mommy?"
Annie looked up at her in shock. "Really?" she asked, starting to perk up. "You'd do that?"
"You bet I would."
Annie hugged Jeanie tight. "Oh, thank you, thank you! This is a dream come true."
"Well, more like a wish", Jeanie chided. "My name's Jeanie, and I'd like to adopt you." She then leaned in and asked. "So, Annie. Where would you like us to live?"
"Hm...", Annie thought for a moment. "I wanna live in a big house with all sorts of cool stuff and I wanna have a big room with lots of dolls and new dresses, and...."
"Whoa there", said Jeanie. "I think I get the picture. And I know just what to do. Here, take my hand." Annie did as Jeanie said and Jeanie took her to the edge of the sidewalk before whistling loudly. Out of nowhere, a pink limo drove up to them and stopped before a chauffeur stepped out and opened the door. "Your ride, Madame", said the driver.
Annie's mouth dropped as she stared in awe. Jeanie stepped into the limo and smiled at Annie. "Come one, Annie. Let's go home."
Annie stepped in and sat with Jeanie as she told the driver where to go. Jeanie sat next to Annie and looked over her wounds. "Your old dad really hurt you bad didn't he?"
Annie nodded glumly. Suddenly, Jeanie's outfit transformed into a retro Nurse's uniform as her hair restyled into a flip. "Golly", she said. "You've been through an awful lot. But Nurse Jeanie will fix you right up, Sweetie." From out of nowhere, she pulled out a medicine bottle and gave the startled girl a teaspoon. As soon as the spoon left her mouth, Annie felt much better. All of her cuts and bruises disappeared instantly. "There you go", said Jeanie. She waved her hand and a lollipop appeared in it. "And here's for being a good patient."
Annie hesitantly took the sucker and stared at the woman in shock. "How'd you do that?", she gasped.
"Oh", Jeanie said embarrassedly. "Sorry, I forgot to mention earlier. I'm a real genie and can grant wishes. But since my last master freed me, I can do it freely instead of having to let someone with a lamp tell me what to do."
"Really?", asked Annie, her shock turning into excitement. "And you want to adopt me?"
"Want to?", she grinned. Some adoption papers appeared in Jeanie's hand, signed and approved. "I already did, as far as anyone else is concerned. Now..." Her nurse's uniform transformed into a beautiful dress.
"That's so cool", squeed Annie. "My new mommy's a genie!"
"You bet", she replied. "Driver, take us to the nearest abandoned house where nobody will be watching me do my thing."
"You got it", replied the driver.
