The three girls drove south for the rest of the day with only brief stops, so as to get as far away from their nightmare as possible. As evening came they began to look for an overnight stop. They had left the Interstate to pick up food supplies and were trying to find their way back onto it further south, but seemed to have taken a wrong turning somewhere. Beth, who was driving at the time, eventually saw a sign for a campsite, so they headed off the main road and followed the signs.
After a couple of miles of single-track road, they came to a large open glade with hard standings and power points, and a shower block. So they parked up.
The office was closed and in darkness. They thought that the owner must have gone for the night and would be back in the morning to collect the fee.
They connected up and Evie put the kettle for hot drinks, Beth and Sue said they were just going out to stretch their legs and have a look around before it got dark.
Evie carried on getting the drinks and some food ready. After 20 minutes or so, she called out the door that everything was ready. There were no answers.
She looked out of the door. Everything was silent, even the birds seem to have left the area.
