The Zoo

Carol decides that if she intends to court Death, she should be a Deathstalker

added by JosieHadley 8 years ago O

The files offered many tempting choices, but one particular file really caught her eye.

"You have a Deathstalker, huh? I thought it was illegal to keep those, " said Carol.

The thin man from the Zoo smiled. "They are permitted to be kept by certain licensed Zoos and research facilities. And we have the proper permits, I assure you."

Carol dropped the file on his desk. "You can really do this? Even with insects?"

"Well, the work is still in its infant stages, and highly experimental. Insects have proven to be a tad more difficult, but we have had some success, " said the man.

"Screw it, " said Carol. "I'm in. I choose the Deathstalker scorpion."

The man smiled and clapped his hands, quickly gathering up the files and removing them from her view. "Excellent choice, " he said with glee. "A very wise choice. I would expect no less from an experienced hunter. The speed, the strength, and the hard armor will serve you well."

"And the venom?" asked Carol. "You will be able to make me capable of producing the venom, too?"

Although she knew that the scorpion was a fearsome hunter, the venom was the primary reason she had selected the creature. Carol had spent time in the Middle East, and she had seen the effects of the venom firsthand. Left untreated, it could be lead to a very painful death.

"Of course, of course, " said the man. "We would not have it any other way. It will be a fine addition to your arsenal. As I said, a very wise choice."

"When do we get started?" asked Carol.

"As soon as you ready, " said the man.

"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get this thing going. I've wasted too much time already, " said Carol, as she stood up.

"Excellent, excellent, " said the man. "You enthusiasm will serve you well. If you will just follow me, " said the man, as he lead her out of the trailer.

Just outside the trailer was a large white tent, the size of a circus tent. Inside Carol saw several scientists, technicians and armed guards, working feverishly. The tent was partitioned into several different areas, separated by thin plastic sheets. The man directed Carol through the maze of makeshift rooms, and into a large open area. There were just few men and women in white coats in the room. The remainder of the room was occupied by several deep freezers, humming loudly as they kept their contents cold.

The man walked up to one the men in a white coat, and handed him a file. The scientist's eyes went wide, and he began to gesture wildly. She could not hear what he was saying, but she got the impression he was not happy with her choice.

"Is there a problem?" asked Carol.

The man glared at the scientist, and quietly whispered something to him. The scientist turned pale white, then began to look through his own papers quietly. The man then gathered up some papers, and walked over to her.

"Of course not. Just a little internal disagreement that will soon be rectified. Now, I feel it is prudent that I must give you a warning: this is an experimental procedure. I am afraid that you will need to fill out some paperwork before we begin, indicating your understanding of the risks involved in this type of procedure. For liability purposes, " said the man, as he handed her several sheets of paper.

Carol signed them without even looking. It was full of legal gibberish that she doubted she would understand even if she had the time to read it. But she felt anxious to leave and begin the hunt. These delays were beginning to annoy her.

"And sign here. Initial there. And sign one more time. And that should be it, " said the man. "Thank you very much. Do you have any questions before we begin?"

"No, let's just get going. I don't want that monster to get away. It owes me, for the death of my brother. And I am going to make it pay. In blood, " said Carol coldly.

"Don't you want to know if it will hurt? Or if the changes will be permanent? That's what everybody else usually wants to know, " said the man.

Carol looked at him with cold, emotionless eyes. "I don't care. If this helps me accomplish my goals, then I will do whatever it takes."

The man smiled. "You know, I like you. I want you to know, if there are any complications, any problems that prevent you from returning to your old life, that the Zoo will take good care of you. There will always be a place for you at the Zoo."

Carol saw the scientist raise a curious eyebrow. The man looked at him, and motioned with his hand for the scientist to begin. He looked over his paperwork again, then walked over to one of the many freezers and opened it. The scientist pulled out a test tube filled with a clear liquid, and Carol saw that there were many more vials still in the freezer. He pulled the solution into a syringe, then approached Carol.

"You sure about this, kid? " said the scientist as he looked down at her.

"Stop being a pussy, and just do it, " said Carol.

The man smiled again. He really did like this girl. She showed promise. The scientist sighed and shrugged his shoulders, then injected the cold liquid into her arm.
