Hunger and riddles

added 7 years ago S

The uncomfortable silence was broken by the grumbling of Molly's stomach.

"I am sorry about that, Jacob. Your breakfast was wonderful, but I am just still so hungry. Can you go downstairs and whip something else up for me? " asked Molly.

"Sure thing, Molly. That's no problem. What would you like?" asked Jacob.

"I don't know why, but for some reason I am really craving something with meat, " said Molly, as her tongue ran along her lips. "Do we have any steak?'

Jacob was getting a little nervous. Molly had never acted this way before. She ate meat sparingly, and was practically a vegan. He was about to confront her about it, but her eyes looked so sad, desperate and hungry. "I'm not sure, Molly. But I'll go to the kitchen and have a look, " said Jacob.

"Oh, and Jacob, " said Molly, as he exited the bedroom. "Make it rare."

Jacob returned with the bloody mess of a steak a short while later. He was surprised to find the door locked.

"Molly, " he asked uncertainly. "Are you okay?"

"Jacob, is that you? " asked Molly from the other side.

"Yeah, it's me. Honey, the door is locked. Why did you lock the door?" asked Jacob, as he fumbled with the doorknob.

"Wait! Don't come in yet, " said Molly. "First, I need to ask you a question. There are two sisters: one gives birth to the other and she, in turn, gives birth to the first. Who are the two sisters?"

Jacob rolled his eyes. "Is this some kind of joke? It isn't funny. C'mon, Molly just open the door, " said Jacob.

"Just answer the question! " said Molly loudly, almost in a roar.

Jacob sighed. After Molly had transformed, he had been doing a little of his own reading, and knew the answer to the riddle of the Sphinx. He didn't know why Molly was demanding his answer to it. But he knew if he wanted to satisfy her, he would have to play along. "The answer is 'day and night'. Now open the door."

The door clicked open, and Molly hugged Jacob tightly when he entered the room, almost causing him to drop her steak.

"Thank you, Jacob, " she said, as she grabbed the steak and began to chew it on the bed.

"No problem. Now do you mind telling me what all that was about? " said Jacob.

"I don't know. I just felt like I had to ask you a riddle, and you had to answer it. Or ....... I couldn't let you in, " said Molly.

Jacob didn't miss Molly's hesitation, and he knew she wasn't telling the complete truth. He knew the legend of the Sphinx, too. Anyone who couldn't answer her riddles was eaten, a meal for the guard of the city. He didn't like the change in her personality, and he really didn't like that she was lying to him. But what bothered him the most was that her body looked a little bit different. It took him a while to figure it out, but her body was definitely bigger than when he left. And as she ate, it seemed like she might be getting even bigger. He didn't want to imagine what she would be like when she was full grown, and what she would do if he ever failed to answer one of her riddles.
