The girls quietly walked out of the employee entrance to the Zoo. Evelyn felt ridiculous in the baggy overcoat. She was the only one to vote against Kim's plan. The collar was turned up to hide her neck, and she wore a novelty hat from the gift shop to cover her head. The sunglasses made it a little difficult to see, but her enhanced vision made up for any loss of visual acuity. The only real problem was her feet. They could find no shoe large enough to cover their long clawed feet. But Evelyn had to admit, unless someone came close, she would just seem like a very strange person out for a late night walk.
Evelyn took the lead, directing them towards the apartment. Kim and Mary Lou hung behind, talking and laughing. Evelyn was a little concerned with how close Mary Lou was getting to Kim. She agreed with everything Kim said, and fawned over her. It was like she was sucking up to her. It didn't just make her sick, it made her a little uneasy. Mary Lou had proven to be very tricky, and Evelyn wondered what she had planned.
Evelyn didn't have long to worry about it. Just a few blocks from home, they ran into another problem. There was someone in front of them, directly in their path. It would be impossible to avoid them, and turning back would look suspicious. It was almost dawn. Evelyn prayed that their disguises would hold up to scrutiny in the slowly brightening light of day.
She peered at the figure, trying to figure out who they were.
