A Not So Small Step

added 7 years ago A

Trevor hoped the brochure hadn’t lied (like it had about allowing raptors in The Flight Dome), when he fluttered over to the door at the back of the transformation room and got ready to tap the button on the wall with his beak to open the door. The brochure said that the instincts of whatever bird the guests changed into would come with the transformation, enabling them to fly about as easily as chewing bubble gum. Those concerns came back tenfold as soon as he tapped the button and the door whirred open.

A surprised caw burst out of his beak.

Trevor was about two hundred feet above the heavily forested floor of the fight dome. It was a far enough height as a human, but as a foot-and-a-half-tall bird, it felt like Trevor was standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon. Even though the transformation rooms were on ground level, the dome’s floor obviously was not.

A nervous caw and cackle bubbled out of Trevor’s beak, filtering in with the heavy drone of other bird calls echoing around the enormous structure.

Trevor watched on as other birds drifted effortlessly around the enclosure. Some were even darting around chasing each other a few hundred feet above him. It was like there was absolutely nothing to this flying thing.

As nervous as he was, watching the other birds flying around brought some instinctive movements to Trevor’s new body. He could feel his tail feathers adjusting behind him and his wings starting to stretch out. Strangely, it helped remind Trevor that, like most of the occupants in here, he was a bird now, too.

Taking a deep breath, Trevor looked back at the open airspace in front of him. “Time for a leap of faith,” he sighed, realizing he could still speak in his raven form, though it sounded like he had a really bad sore throat.

Opening his wings and tail feathers, Trevor hunched down and pushed off the ledge. His heart was fluttering faster than his wings.
