Lucas looks at his masterpiece and wonders what to do next. Absentmindedly he draws to big gray shapes over his brother ears. Absentmindedly he shapes and colors them into two large animal ears high above his head.

I was just stepping out of the shower, when I noticed my ears burning and feeling swollen. Not immediately worried, I tried to ignore it and dried myself off. Instead of going away, it got worse, until my ears started feeling strange and heavy. I stepped over in front of the mirror and gasped at what I saw.
My ears were long, thin, pointed, and covered in soft gray fur. They looked completely inhuman. When I heard Lucas start giggling in another room, I felt a spasm in my left ear as it swiveled toward the door, trying to pinpoint the sound. I put my right hand over my mouth, trying not to scream. I reached my left hand up and touched my finger to the ear, before quickly pulling it away. Then I gently fingered the ear from bottom to top, amazed at the new sensations.
Before long I had both ears in my hands: holding them, tugging them, turning them this way and that--first trying to convince myself they weren't real, then just trying to get a feel for them.
"How did this even happen?" I found myself thinking. "What kind of ears are these? They look like a rabbit's or a donkey's."
