You fit the key into the lock and are shocked when the door suddenly creaks open. You look into the shaft of darkness of the crack in your front door, and take a step back. Eyeing the door cautiously, you back down your front steps and keep going. You're so uneasy that you fail to notice that you've stepped into the road. A honking horn brings you out of your trance and you dive to the sidewalk into the front of your house. A taxi stops in the middle of the road and a middle-aged driver with graying black hair sticks the head out of the window. "HEY! Pull your head outta your ass and watching where you're going!" he yells. You just lay there on the sidewalk, looking up at him in disbelief. Shaking his head, he rolls the window back up and speeds down the road out of sight.
You clamber back to your feet and approach the unlocked door with care. Why is your door unlocked, You rack your brain, looking for a memory of you locking it, but you can't seem to come up with one. You can't just stand out here all night. Gulping, you walk up your steps again and are about to enter when you hear a voice behind you.
"Hey!"
You whip your head around and see your neighbor Clair standing on the sidewalk, with the skyscrapers of the city you live in towering behind her. Her long red hair is matted with sweat and hangs down in tangles to her shoulders. She's wearing a red rain coat and black yoga pants. She must have been out on a late night jog. You're about the same age as her. "You OK, Blair?" she asks. "I saw you. That taxi almost hit you! You must have been real scared to not notice that!" she says. You look at her with shock. Should you tell her about to body in the woods, and that you came home and your door was unlocked? You decide against it, as it would probably just freak her out.
"Yeah, I just got back from a scary movie." You say. "My house looks a lot like the one that shot the movie in." You say, without being very convincing. Clair eyes you with suspicion, but decides you must be telling truth. "Well, I have your number, so if you need anything, don't hesitate to call!" she says in a cheerful voice. 'Yeah, Clair, I will..." you say, eyeing your front door again. "Well, see ya later!" Clair says, and she jogs off towards her house.
You watch her go then turn back to your door. You don't know if you're ready to go in. Should you call Clair on your cell phone and ask her to come in with you? Or should you just suck it up and go inside?
