You decide to suck it up and go in. You've already embarrassed yourself with your little stunt in the woods, and now is the time to prove yourself. Armed with new confidence, you march towards your front door and push it open. Snagging the key from the lock, you enter and shut the door behind you.
It's deathly quiet and pretty dark in your house. You're in your living room. The light from the millions of windows of the skyscrapers your house faces casts dim light into the room, making it quasi-seeable. You put your keys in a bowl on a table by the door and head into your kitchen without turning on the lights. Your stomach rumbles and you realize you're hungry. You pull open your fridge and grab an apple. Biting into it, you shut the fridge, plunging the kitchen into darkness again. You feel your hands towards the wall, where your handset hangs. Your fingers brush against the hard plastic receiver, but the hole where the actual phone should go is empty.
You drop the apple and it hits the floor, making a strange clumping noise. Ok, you're SURE you left your phone on the receiver when you left the house, you told your good friend Alex over the phone that you were going on a late night walk. If the recover's gone, what happened to it? Bending down, you run your hands along the floor, maybe it fell. You don't find it and you stand back up.
You decide to just go straight to your room and go to sleep. You'll call the police in the morning. Putting the missing phone into the back of your mind, you leave your kitchen and turn back down the hallway towards your room. Having enough of the darkness, you go to flick on the lights in your room. They don't turn on. Puzzled, you flick the switch several times, expecting light to flood the dark, but none comes. Shit. Must have blown a fuse or something.
You're not exactly thrilled to have the lights not on in your house, but hey, it has to be fixed. Fumbling your way into the kitchen again, you pull open your junk drawer and pull out a flashlight. You snap it on and it emits a feeble circle of light. You can only see a few feet in front of you. You stumble towards the door of your garage. Pulling it open and sidestepping your car, you pull open the fuse box and are shocked to see that all the switches have been flipped to OFF expect for the one to the living room, which has been left ON.
You're about to flick them all on when a loud crashing noise comes from behind you. Turning, you walk slowly, flashlight in front of you, towards the living room, where you're sure the crash came from. Your small circle of light illuminates a picture of you and Alex lying on the floor, string broken and frame cracked. It must have fallen off the wall. You head into the living room and peer in.
You drop the flashlight in shock. It hits the floor with a thud and the light goes out. Right in the shadowy corner, in your favorite chair, is a dark shape with glowing eyes. You can't tell if it's a human, an animal, or some weird hybrid. It's too dark to tell. You whimper in fear as it lifts a dark shape that must be an arm or something towards the switch of the lamp on the table next to the chair.
