Kyle opened the door, and the two of you stepped forward, cautiously. Each looking in a different direction, you both were caught off guard by what you saw. Looking right, you saw two people, or what used to be two people, discussing what became of them. You did not recognize them, but you figured they used to be your hall-mates from next door.
One of them was looked like a living man-shaped blob. The poor guy's body looked like it was made of wet clay. His upper torso resembled something close to a man's, but his bottom half looked like a pile of melting candle wax. He had no legs, just single goo like trunk that held up his torso. He was talking to what looked like a bird-guy. The avian man had two clawed hands and two brightly colored wings, awkwardly folded on his back. His legs were partially coved by torn jeans. His hawk-like feet nervously scratched the wood floor.
You felt the skin on the left side of your neck suddenly stretch. You and Kyle almost tried to walk off in opposite directions again. Kyle turned to you, "Mason, come on. Lets check in on Gabe." Carefully, you walk down the left hand corridor. Kyle kept a steady hand on the wall to help support the both of you. You and he stumbled several times, drawing the attention of some of the other changed guys out in the hall. But everyone returned to their panicked conversations or returned to their own rooms. Out of everyone you passed in the hall, you and Kyle had neither the most bizarre nor extreme transformation. Unfortunately, you also did not have the most mild of transformations either. Some of the others had weird looking human bodies, but none of them shared one. Getting their old bodies was on everyone's mind though.
Finally a few doors down, Kyle knocked on the door your mutual buddy's room. An unfamiliar person greeted them. "Man, look at you two! At least my change isn't as bad as your guys'," said a very gruff voice as he ushered you and Kyle in. The voice belonged to a very tall Cyclops looking person. As if to make his point, you and Kyle tripped over each other and fell into the dorm. The cyclops laughed loudly as he closed the door. He offered a hand, and you accepted it. He easily pulled the two of you up with one hand.
Taking a closer look at his face, you were able to recognize it. "Gabe!" you exclaimed. His face had actually not changed too much, but the single giant eye in the middle of his forehead is what threw you off.
"Yep, its me. Check out the bod... I'm muscular now!" He seemed genuinely excited as he flexed his bulging muscles. The old Gabe was as skinny as a twig and very short. Now he stood nearly 9 feet tall.
"At least your happy with your transformation." Kyle said, frustration clearly in his voice.
You decided to change the subject, interjecting before Gabe or Kyle could say anything else. "What happened? Have you seen the news?"
"Oh, yeah. Half of the world is in an uproar." He walked past you as he turned on his TV. A new anchor was in the middle of talking about the recent epidemic sweeping the world. She looked pretty much human, except that she was holding her head in her right hand. There was just a neck stump on top of her shoulders. You and Kyle fell back into a chair, completely taken aback.
"What happened?" Kyle turned to Gabe. "We only saw the report from university, and it was lacking a lot of details."
"A comet is what happened." Gabe explained. "I've been up early hearing and reading the reports." He muted the TV. "A comet broke up in the atmosphere, blanketing the east coast in a violet dust like substance. Everyone was put asleep and changed as it moved across the United States, down in Mexico and up into Canada." Gabe used a lot of hand motions when he talked. "Its not well into Russia and China, and still moving strong. The experts expect it to have blanketed the world by tonight!"
You and Kyle spend the next half hour or so getting caught up and talking with Gabe. The world would be a whole new place soon. It was only slightly comforting that everyone else was effected by the comet.
Finally, you convinced Kyle to head back to your dorm. He and you closed the door to your room, and pressed your shared back against it. Slowly, you both dropped to the ground and leaned against the door. It was a long time before either of you spoke. "If the whole world is changing... will we be stuck together... permanently?" Kyle said, sounding down.
You shared the feeling he expressed in his voice. Or, was it your defeated feeling he was feeling. Sharing a body was confusing and difficult and not something you wanted to do for the rest of you life. "I don't know man, I don't know. I just know the whole world has gone to crap. At least we're still human." You both let out a long sigh.
