After parking in front of the Seattle Police Department, FBI Agent Theodore Green sat in the car he borrowed from the local bureau and took out his cellphone. After looking around to make sure no one was nearby, not even electronically, he activated its government issued "scrambler" function and made a call.
"Hello? Mrs. Twist?" began Green, calling the number on the Moon Lake Town Chancellor's business card from memory.
"Yes Agent Green, but please call me Samantha," she requested.
"If you call me Theodore," he asked in return.
"Sure. How are things in Seattle?" she asked, looking around at those gathered with her in the Town Hall. Everyone present was concerned that recent events concerning the capture of wanted fugitive Lionel Ulysses would result in were society being exposed to the world, if not Moon Lake's secret as an unknown sanctuary to weres as well.
"As well as can be expected at the moment," said Green. "I've managed to convince the Seattle PD that the matter of Ulysses having a tail wasn't worth pursuing. They now think his gang had a weird fixation with the legendary Rat Pack out of Las Vegas, and that Ulysses took the matter a little too far with a costume appendage. The fact they haven't been able to find hide or hair of it now was a little troubling to them, but since Ulysses is also a known drug dealer and user, they're considering Tail Gate closed."
"That's good, but Tail Gate?" asked Samantha.
"A little name I couldn't help coining, but haven't used until now," explained Green. "However, media reaction is still mixed at the moment, but hopefully it will be reduced to just tabloid fodder in time."
"Let's hope so but if not, that we have a lot of experience dealing with that."
"Good. Either way, the name and location of a certain place is still unknown to the general public," revealed Green.
"Great news!" said Samantha with a smile towards the others with her. Talking cryptically could be a little confusing at times, but better safe than sorry she thought, not knowing about the scrambler. "So what happens to Ulysses in the meantime?"
"Soon as he's pronounced fit enough medically, I'll haul his ass before a federal judge for arraignment. The big questions in regards to that will be who has jurisdiction for which crimes, and whether or not their prosecutor pushes for the death penalty."
"You do realize the long term consequences if he only gets a life sentence?" asked Samantha.
"Yes, but that's a bridge we'll have to cross when or if we come to it," answered Green in return. "Remember, I have a very serious stake in the future of a certain community and its population too."
"I know, which reminds me. While it would take longer, be careful with Ulysses. A bite or scratch can be just as life changing."
"So I've been advised by someone very close to me," replied Green. "Which reminds me, a couple of months after Ulysses is nothing but an unpleasant memory, my wife and I will be planning a vacation..."
"I know a great spot where you'd get a very warm welcome and can have the trip of a lifetime," said Samantha, thinking she'd make arrangements for Green to finally become a were and be with his wife the way they longed for when they did make it to Moon Lake.
"Looking forward to it! Gotta go now. Take care and stay alert till all of this completely blows over," advised Green, before hanging up.
Done with her phone call, the Town Chancellor quickly updated the Deputy Mayor and the Police Chief with the news. Everyone within the room was a were and had overheard the conversation, but it didn't hurt to keep proceedings formal and organized.
"Can we truly get that lucky?" wondered the Deputy Mayor.
"Maybe," said Police Chief O'Hara, "but I have to side with Agent Green. Until Ulysses is dealt with once and for all..."
"Okay. Mayor Stovall is due back from his mother's by Tuesday at the latest. Meanwhile, even if anyone in the media decides to continue investigating Tail Gate, as Green called it, the town is still safe at the moment," pointed out Samantha.
"But there's still the question of Ulysses' day in court," said the Deputy Mayor.
"Which is a matter we have no say in, especially if we want to keep Moon Lake safe," Chief O'Hara reminded everyone.
"And even if the media furor over the tail does die down, what if some reporter comes here looking for background info on Ulysses?" asked the Deputy Mayor in return.
"Okay. So for now, we hold off issuing a were alert warning everyone about the potential threat so we don't risk starting an unnecessary panic, but we keep monitoring the situation and keep our paws crossed," said Samantha.
"I'll put Officer Connor on it, since he's already involved," said O'Hara.
"Good. We'll have to brief the Mayor once he's officially back on duty, but otherwise, the less people who know about this, the better," said the Deputy Mayor, before they discussed further strategies in event of the worst case scenario.
