Weather Woes

added 7 years ago A BM S O

You blink in disbelief. Extending out from around your shoulder blades, as though they were always present, are a pair of extremely large leathery-looking wings, slightly darker than your skin tone. You would think they are a costume prop if not for the fact that you can make out the tiny spiderweb of blood vessels and the dark knobbiness of bone extending through them. They are so large you are surprised you haven't toppled over backwards from the weight, but shockingly, they seem to be amazingly light. You almost wonder if they are an illusion, or at least you would, if you hadn't experienced the bone-jarring pain you had just gone through.

As you finally stand up, your shirt, now in tatters, falls from your upper body to reveal that your torso muscles have become quite pronounced, as though to ensure you have the strength to maneuver the new appendages on your back. Carefully examining yourself, you notice no other changes at the moment, but the wings are disturbing enough. Even if you could somehow put a shirt on, there was no way you would be able to hide the wings, which tower above you. You reach over your shoulder to touch a wing gingerly, and shudder at the strange sensation of feeling your hand through the wing.

"Dammit, why couldn't it let me fly like a superhero? What the heck am I gonna do with wings like a bleedin' bat??" you mutter to yourself in despair. A thought strikes you, and you rummage around in your pants pockets, but come up empty. There's no chance of undoing this with another wish right now. Letting out a big exhale, you decide that the thing to do is to find civilization, grab some coins, and fix this problem as soon as possible. However, there is one small snag. You don't know where civilization is located anymore, and you're pretty sure you'd get tangled up in the woods if you tried to follow your path back. Reluctantly, you look back over your shoulder again.

Stepping away from the well, you concentrate for a second, and with a thought your new muscles and bones begin to extend. You can't help but let out a low whistle as you see the full extent of your wings. The wingspan is about triple your height. There is no hiding this, at least not with what you have on hand. However, since the well has dealt you lemons, you might as well make lemonade. You decide your best option to get back to a town - any town - is to fly.

After a few experimental flaps, you manage to adjust your angle to achieve some lift. With a deep breath, you gather up your courage, run across the hilltop, and jump, flapping your new wings like mad. Amazingly, you see the ground drop away beneath you. You would be extremely excited if you weren't so terrified. As you circle around a bit, learning how to adjust your heading by dipping or tilting your wings, you realize that you still can't see very far from the hilltop, the ground being covered in a thick blanket of mist, and the grey skies blocking the sun, which might have served to give you some sense of direction. Spotting the path, you decide to head off in that direction over the woods. However, as you fly, you realize that you cannot make out the path through the trees, so you try to gain some more altitude to see if you can spot the edge of the woods.

Unfortunately, all around you lies mist, and now you cannot even locate the hill with the wishing well. A sudden updraft catches you unawares, and you struggle to regain control as you end up flying through a low cloud. By the time you exit, everything below is mist and everything above is cloud, the only difference between the two being the shadowy swathes of trees which make the mist blacker than the sky and give some indication of where the ground is. Completely lost, you decide to pick a direction and fly straight ahead, hoping you will at least locate some shelter before dark.

After flying for what seems like forever, you are about ready to give up. The light is fading, and you can barely make out anything below you. The only reference you have in this rapidly darkening world is gravity, allowing you to at least determine which way is down. Your new muscles are starting to ache, and the wind seems to be picking up as well. A flash in the distance alerts you to the fact that the weather is also not on your side.

You turn away from the flash, hoping to outrun the storm, but it is coming faster than you can make headway. Suddenly, a bright bolt of lightning splits the air too close for comfort, but it does serve to illuminate your surroundings, much to your shock. Surrounding you on all sides are rocky mountain peaks, like jagged teeth cutting into the sky. You really have no idea where you are now, and are beginning to panic. A second flash reveals something odd jutting out from the side of one of the peaks: a structure. Too scared to think twice, you draw your wings a bit closer and dive for cover. You make a less than graceful landing on a flat area of rock just in front of the building, and run under a slight overhang just as the rain begins to fall.

You squint up into the dark, trying to figure out what the structure is, when the lightning comes to your aid. Amid the ominous crash of thunder, you realize the building is a large stone castle or fortress with tall spires, almost like something out of a medieval fantasy. Knowing you have never even heard of anything like that near where you live, you come to terms with just how lost you are as you shiver from the cold. You need warmth and shelter, but the castle looks less than inviting. Gnawing on your lip as the wind grows worse, you make up your mind to...
