"Hey, wait! Don't just go running o-..." you holler to Leona and Cain as you barrel out the door, only to see a pile of flailing paws on the opposite side of the hallway. Yipping gleefully around a sheepish Leona is Cain, obviously not taking the situation seriously. Sighing, you thank your lucky stars Leona is still not too good on her four feet, and hurry over to help her up.
"Look, this place is full of traps and dangers, don't just take off like that," you rebuke her as you raise her to her feet. "We need to stick together."
"But we have to find Camelia! What if something's got her?!" Leona asks frantically, and prepares to run pell-mell through the hallway again. Before she can make a break for it, you grab her by the arm and snatch up Cain by the scruff.
"We're not going to do her any good if we get attacked by something or fall into another trap," you say sternly, and Leona hangs her head, acknowledging your words. "Besides, where do we go? We don't know how far she fell or where."
"That's why we gotta start looking..." Leona starts, but you cut her off.
"She said she's been here a while, she can handle herself. Besides, you just left our best clue behind," you nod back at the bedroom. In response to Leona's confused look, you lead the way back into the bedroom. To your dismay, it appears the trap door has closed as you left. However, you know its approximate location, and take care to avoid it.
"So what did we leave behind?" Leona pouts as she enters, and closes the door behind her when you indicate for her to do so.
"The passage under the trapdoor itself," you respond, looking around the bedroom. Spotting an urn in a corner, you tear up pieces of the blanket that was on you and fashion a rope, which you tie around the urn. Tying off one end of the rope, you set the urn on its side and roll it towards the trap door, keeping your distance. Luckily, the weight works, and without a sound, the trapdoor opens and the rope goes taught, the urn clanging against the wall of the passage. Approaching carefully, both you and Leona lean over slightly, looking down. You both know it is deep, since Camelia's screams faded off, but there's a possibility sound will carry.
"CAMELIA!!" you shout down after taking a deep breath. "CAN YOU HEAR ME?"
"She could be unconscious, you know," Leona sniffles, after hearing no response. You recognize it as a possibility, but you need to get a sense of where the passage goes, and you really don't want to dive down yourself. Walking over to one of the sconces, you pull out a torch, and walking to the trap, drop it in. You watch the flame grow smaller and smaller, but suddenly it changes to a dull glow before disappearing. It obviously didn't go out, since there was still a faint light, so you conclude that the tunnel has sloped off somewhere, almost like a slide. Which means, it could lead to practically anywhere in the lower levels of the castle. Remembering your experience with the werewolf, you're not eager to go below. You affirm to yourself that it is too risky to go down the passage.
"So where do we look for her?" Leona turns to you, demanding a decision.
"That trap doesn't go straight down, so it could lead anywhere," you explain. "I guess we can start heading down, but maybe we should look around a bit up here first to see if there's anything we could use. Camelia did say there was something she wanted to show us, plus if there's normal people around, maybe they can help us get out of here." Leona frowns at you, and you're not sure if she agrees with you. If she decides to go looking for Camelia in the basement anyway, you will probably follow, but you won't be happy about it. Cain, on the other hand, cocks his head and wags his tail slightly, as though he didn't have a care in the world. The cute act was starting to irritate you, and you wondered how much the pup actually understood.
"Fine, but let's hurry," Leona reluctantly agrees. Grateful your reason has won her over, you open the door to the hallway and are about to step out, when you hear something in the distance. From around a bend in the hallway, you can definitely hear the sound of footsteps.
