Taxidermy and Time Travel

added by The Brilliant Dr. Garfield 7 years ago A

"Well, as long as we're here..." you say, looking around the room, "We might as well explore around a little." Leona nods and pads over to the antique cabinet, opening the frosted glass doors. Meanwhile, you walk over to a few of the tapestries hanging along the walls. The first one is a red geometric design on a velvet purple background. You pull it aside and see an old window. Outside, you are relieved to see the sky has lightened considerably - it's now a darkish blue rather than straight black. It must be around three or four AM. You figure you've been here about five hours. And in that time, with the things you've seen, all your perceptions of reality have been shattered.

"Hey... look at this..." Leona calls from the other side of the room. You walk to the antique cabinet, passing over the red plush rug that covers the middle of the room. Leona is turning over some kind of compass in her hands. "What is it?" you ask her. It's a medium-sized disc of copper, with a white circle in the middle. But instead of the usual N, S, E, and W, there's a list of years, ranging from 2016 to 1153. A gold arrow points to the 2016 year. The writing is so small you can barley make the years out. "Wait..." Leona says, sounding confused. "Why does it go up to 2016? Why doesn't it stop at 1968?" she asks. "Uh... probably a misprint." You say, quickly changing the subject. "Here, you try and figure that thing out, I'll keep looking at these tapestries..." you say.

You walk back over to the tapestry next to the purple one. It has a coat of arms with two lions, some roses, and a sword going down the middle. You pull this one back put see only a blank wall. The next three were the same, just blank walls. But the fourth was different. It was emerald green and reached down to the ceiling, with a gold interloping circles. You pull this one aside to see...a door. You look back to Leona, who is still fiddling with the compass. You push the door open... and see two eyes glowing in the darkness.

You jump back and almost scream ins hock, but it is caught in your throat. You pull the sword out and are ready to strike when you realize the eyes aren't moving. Leona still hasn't noticed you. You go forward apprehensively into the dark room with the eyes. Unfortunately, your sword strikes something soft and there's a flash.

When you open your eyes, you find, to your horror, that you can't move. Your eyes are fixed in one position, with the closet door opened to just a crack. But you see the tip of a wing, like yours, at the bottom of your vision. Light is streaming in, just enough for you to see a slice of the floor and the walls in the crack of the door. "Hey! Where'd you go?" Leona calls. You try to open your mouth and yell for help, but you can't move your mouth either. In fact, you can't move anything. You hear her paws padding over to the closet and watch as she pulls the door the rest of the way open. Leona takes one look and screams, turning and slamming the door, plunging you into darkness.

You try to scream again, but still can't move. What has happened to you? Without warning, the door opens again and Leona peers in. Looking down, she sees whatever you can't see. "Oh no..." Leona mumbles, looking straight at you. You can't turn your head to see what you have become. Suddenly, Leona bends down and picks up the sword on the floor. She gets closer to you and fits it into your mouth - that's when you realize you have a muzzle. Then, bending down, she hoists the thing with your wings up into your view. It's a copy of you, but it's unmoving and unblinking. She rams the copy onto the sword in your muzzle and there is another flash.

You're sprawled on the floor, looking up at Leona. "Thanks... what happened to me?" you ask, getting up and putting a hand to your head. On the closet floor in front of you is a taxidermy wolf. "Hey - all your wolf parts are gone!" Leona cries excitedly. You rush out of the closet and look at yourself in antique cases' glass. You look just like yourself again, except for your wings, which you're used to now. "How did that happen?" Leona asks, coming up behind you. "Maybe... the swap diluted the changes." You say. Leona almost screams in excitement, causing you to stumble into the cabinet. "That's how we become normal again! We just need to find something with a lion body, something with ram horns, a snake, and something with bat wings! Then we can get out of here! Let's go!" she runs towards the door, but you catch her midway across the rug.

"Leona, you can't just go running off into this place just because we have a way to change back! You know what's in here! We need to search around carefully!" Leona looks at you, exasperated. "But... look, you lost your wolf parts, you why can't I lose... lose... this?" she asks, indicating her lioness body. "And this?" she says, pointing to her horns. "And that thing?" she cries, pointing to her snake, you is dozing. You see the beginnings of tears in her eyes. "You can.... you can." You say, putting a hand on her shoulder. "We just need to do it slowly." She wipes her eyes and nods. "Of course. Yeah, we need to be careful." She says.

"Here, let's take a closer look at this..." she says, pulling out the compass-like thing. You both stare at it, deep in thought. "Here... push that arrow to 2015." You say. Nodding, she pushes the arrow one place to the small 2015. Suddenly, a whirlwind overtakes you and Leona. Mist springs up from apparently nowhere and spins around and around you both. A loud ticking clock can be heard. Suddenly, the whirlwind stops and you both find yourselves standing in the same room as before. But some things are different. The disturbed tapestry with the door behind it now looks undisturbed. The opened antique cabinet door is now closed. A previously bare spot on the wall has a painting of a man with cat eyes on it."What happened?" Leona asks. You don't answer her and instead walk over to the tapestry with the window behind it. You pull it open and are shocked to see a clear dark sky that is a few hours from sunrise. Not a cloud can be seen.

"I think we went back in time..." you mutter, walking back over to her. "Woah! Cool..." Leona says, fiddling with the arrow. "No! Don't..." you put your hand out, trying to stop her, but it's too late. The whirlwind appears again. Leona watches in wonder and over the sound of the ticking clock you see what year the arrow has landed on...
