As soon as you let up, all you see coming at you is fur and large, sharp fangs, accompanied by equally frightening claws. The beast sinks it's teeth into your shoulder. You cry out as you feel them pierce your flesh and even more as it shakes you back and forth. You feel the skin and muscle underneath tear and the blood leaking from the wound, soaking your shirt. You cry out again and resume hitting the beast with the tire iron. You strike and strike again until it lets go. As it releases and begins to back away you deliver a striking blow to the monster's head followed by another and another until you hear a sickening crack. You hit it twice more until you are satisfied the monster is dead. You back away from the monster and take it in all at once for the first time. The large snout and pointed ears covered in coarse grey and brown fur had the look of an abnormally large wolf, but the rest of the body seemed distinctly humanoid, although covered in the same dense fur. You notice the flashlight a little ways off, still on and left where you dropped it when you were attacked by the beast. You walk over and pick it up and then immediately walk past the beast without looking back, deciding your mind has been playing tricks on you and you need to get help immediately.
You find the road in no time and continue following it, trying not to think too much about what you saw in the woods despite your stinging shoulder wound constantly reminding you. Soon enough, you break free of the woods and find yourself back in town. You make your way to the police station and walk inside. You head straight for the desk clerk, who takes one look and you and flinches in alarm. You proceed to relay the entire events of the evening. She then directs you to the waiting area where you go and wait as you hear the desk clerk alert a patrol car to the area you said you were. As you waited, a medic showed up and took a look at your shoulder wound. After cleaning it up they decided you didn't need to go to the hospital since it wasn't that bad and after administering a rabies shot was able to get the wound bandaged for you. As the medic finished up, you saw an officer approach you. He sits down next to you, visibly distressed.
"We were able to locate the car," the officer was having trouble looking you in the face. This is not good. "Upon searching the area, we discovered the remains of your girlfriend, Denise. I'm so very sorry."
You heart sank. No matter the fight the two of you had, you never wanted it to end like this. You nodded in recognition of that the officer was saying, but at a loss for words.
"We didn't find the animal you described though. We think we found where it attacked you, from the blood and all, but found no body of the animal you said you killed." The officer stood up.
You looked up at the officer and whispered, "Then it's still alive."
"It must be. We still have other officers out there and searching the area. Come on, I'll give you a ride back to your dorm."
You stand up and walk out of the station with the officer. This all seems so strange. You could've sworn you had killed whatever animal it was that attacked you. But maybe not. Still, exhaustion was setting in and all you wanted now was to sleep. The officer dropped you off at your dorm and you went straight up to your suite. Luckily, your dormmates were out still. You went straight to your bed, pulling off your dirty clothes and flopped down on the mattress, letting the sweet sleep wash over you.
