Deputy police chief Thomas Johnson had become the acting police chief, due to the fact that the city’s chief of police was a genie, and with all the magic drained from the city, he was completely useless.

He was feeling a little smug, completely terrified since the Princess of the Kingdom had been kidnapped, but still a little smug. The Phoenix Kingdom’s capital city, Sun’s Blessing, police department was made almost entirely out of humans, 97% to be exact.

Other kingdoms would tease the S.B.P.D. because of this, saying that using humans for law enforcement would never work. While other creatures could use their magic to get around, as weapons and to detain people, while humans would have to use cars, guns and handcuffs, which others believed to be inefficient. Well, who’s laughing now? While the magical populace of the Sun’s Blessing was forced to find somewhere safe to try and conserve energy, the humans were completely fine. Without the need to use magic the mostly human police force could search the city for the kidnappers and Princess FireLight unaffected.

Thomas was right now in the dispatch room, which was buzzing with activity, Thomas had made every human police member on the force go out to look for the princess, everyone. On duty, off duty, retired, in training, it really didn’t matter, all that did matter was finding that princess.

“Uh, sir?” An lieutenant said, walking into the room.

“Yes Lieutenant.” Thomas said, turning around to see the lieutenant.

“Captain Aurora of the Royal Guard is here to talk to you.”

“Good, send him in.” Thomas knew Captain Aurora personally, they went to the same school and are good friends. But due to him being the deputy chief and not just the chief he didn’t get talk to him much during work, but with the chief of police out of commision it was his time to shine.

“Let me help you sir.” Thomas heard the lieutenant say though the doorway.

“Don’t patronize me boy, I’ll be fine!” Thomas heard someone say, but he knew who it was. Captain Aurora walked into the room, looking very sickly. Now, when phoenixes aren’t, as they put it, “in splendor” they usually look very pale, but today, he was particularly pale. His armor, made specially for him, wasn’t as impressive as it’s supposed to be. The flames were died out and feathers, well, they looked like normal feathers. His sword, feared by all, was nothing more than a stick without magic to give it strength.

“Hey Frank, wanna coffee?” Thomas asked, walking over to a nearby coffee machine. Captain Aurora just looked at him, happiness clearly not present on his face. “I’m going to get myself a coffee. You know what? Coffee’s shit. I’m going to make myself some tea!”

“You worried acting chief Johnson?” Captain Aurora asked, crossing his arms and rising an eyebrow.

“What? Me? Worried? Yes. No. Don’t be ridiculous. What?” Thomas stammered incoherently.

“You always do this when you’re worried, rambling nonsense and calling everyone by their first name.” Aurora said, shaking his head.

“Of course I’m fucking worried! The mother fucking PRINCESS has been kidnapped! And on her birthday no doubt! And even with 1700 police and 120 S.W.A.T.s we still haven’t found anything!” Thomas shouted, waving his arms while panicking.

“Well you should be worried.” Aurora said, finding a chair to sit on. “I’m pretty sure you are wondering why I came here, aren’t you?”

“To see how we’re doing is the trenches?” Thomas guessed, as he started to boil the water.

“It’s because I’ve been ordered by the king to oversee this operation.” Aurora explained, picking up a pen to write on the clipboard he had with him.

“I gathered as much, the police are paid to protect the people, while royal guard are paid to the monarchy. So it make sense that they’d send you down here. I was a fool though to think you would be stopped by this lack of magic.” Thomas said, getting a mug and a tea bag.

“Yes, you always told me to train my body, not just my mind.” Aurora said, looking over his notes to see what he thought should be done.

“Hey are gonna keep talking or are you gonna find the princess?!” One of the dispatch officers shouted to Thomas and Aurora.

“Are you going to your job or do you want me to arrest you for impeding justice?!” Aurora shouted back to the officer, who promptly went back to work.

The water finished boiling and Thomas poured it into the mug. “Well then,” Thomas said, “What do we do first?”
