James tried to stand up but quickly realised his body didn't work like that anymore and fell back down into a squatting position. He was shocked to see his reflection in a large mirror opposite. Though back to his usual size, he was basically still a toad. This might be even worse than before, at least he could blend in then, now he was some kind of aberration of nature. How were people going to react to this? At least if he could explain to people...he gave it a try.
"Ribbit! Ribbit!" he bellowed. Shit! he still couldn't communicate other than by croaking. This was a disaster - why had he let that stupid witch practice her magic on him?
"James, I'm very sorry for the inconvenience here. What my daughter did to you was inexcusable but she must learn to correct the consequences of her own actions. I hope you understand." the wizard offered by way of an apology.
"Ribbit! Ribbit!" James replied angrily. Why should he be left like this just so some spoiled brat could be taught a lesson. It felt like he was the one being punished for her misbehaviour. Besides, he had no confidence her next spell would work any better than the last one. He felt sure her father could turn him back to normal immediately if he wanted to. Why wouldn't he?
"Look, I know this may sound very selfish of me, but there is another reason I would like to keep you like that for a while" the old man stroked his beard, deep in thought. James knew there was more to this than punishing Kayla.
"You see, our circus has been struggling recently and we need a star attraction to get us back on our feet financially" the old man explained "Normally I would never use magic to our advantage in a situation like this as it is completely unethical. However, in this case the damage has already been done and by not using further magic we may be able to make use of you in your current form. Besides, as far as I am aware you did give my daughter permission to cast her spells on you, even if you did undoubtedly misunderstand the nature of her request"
"Ribbit!" James protested "Ribbit! Ribbit!"
"I'm sorry, but I've made my mind up" the wizard, who somehow seemed to be able to understand James replied with a sigh "If you spend a week with us as part of the circus freak show then I will restore you to your old self and reward you for your patience."
"Ribbit?" James asked.
" If you don't cooperate I'm afraid I will have no choice but to leave you as a toad, though obviously I will not be able to leave you at your current size." the wizard answered bluntly "So I think you will agree it is best for all of us if you do as I say"
