That same night, the Wizard sent Kayla back to her trailer and called in Mr. Kardinali – the circus owner. He told what had happened to his own way, saying that James wanted to kiss Kayla after the show thus she had to turn him into a frog and then the spell didn’t work back. James wanted to protest when he heard that plain, disgusting lie but he remembered that the man could understand his croaks and had he didn’t want to be that way forever. So he just stood there, very quietly…
The Wizard convinced the owner, especially with the money part, both man quickly settled the plans and then proceeded to give James a good look.
“He still has human eyes…maybe they should be freakier” the owner criticized. The Wizard moved his hands and a sudden green flash tingled James’ eyes, he blinked and when he opened them the vision was different, he could see the whole tent, and part of his back with a 270 degrees vision field.
“He likes it” the owner smirked. James now had big, black and gold frog eyes.
He was put in a cage carriage; the acrobats and other freaks passed nearby to see its new asset and the “douchebag that tried to have his way with Kayla” story quickly spread. James was called the worst names. Circus people really protected his back. Plants and rubber inflating pool where put inside his “cell” and someone nailed a board on top of it which James never knew what it was. He came to find out at the first night, when people after the show paid an extra ticket to see him: “The Monstrous Frog-Man”. As told to by the Wizard, James would leap and jump around. The Wizard menaced him to be more authentic, James tried something different the second time. The owner , this time, would present him and pass around a hat with crickets which the kids – the front row was always boys and teens, would grab to throw at him while recording on their cellphones with the other. James, after discovering how far his tongue could reach would flick it and catch some treats mid-air. The crowd would go mad! Girls and women let their typical “Eww, gross!” and a giggle, while boys would mock him and laugh. He’d do that too probably if he was in their shoes.
The days passed being fed flies and crickets, the Owner would ask the Wizard to let him out and hop around the camping site. Of course James thought about escaping, but the Wizard was always being the corner. He’d meet Kayla at the tent that would throw him treats and sorry herself once again. Some circus people like the dwarves or the bearded woman would chat with him sincerely about their lives and just laugh at the croaks they didn’t understand, although James would actually be answering them. That was a torture!
At night the crowd would come and he’d repeat the same trick. At the last day of the week he was actually moved to the main show, he entered by last and the Wizard stood in the middle of the arena while he’d jump and leap through a race track. The crowd (James never had one so big) applauded immensely.
“You can see the freak after the show, for three dollars more!” the Wizard announced.
The other day, exactly one week and one day after he’d been transformed, the Wizard met him at his cage with a frowning face. It was really early in the morning and part of the camping hadn't woken up yet. He knocked on the bars and woke him up from his watery bed.
“Ribbit, Ribbit, Ribbit!”
“Yes, we did had a contract and the week has passed, just like our money problem” the Wizard smirked. He gave a sign to someone and form behind the cage a man- looking like a Texian tycoon, wearing all white having a goatee, a beer gut and a white cowboy hat appeared.
“James, this is Mr. Guterrez” he said.
“Howdy creature!”
“He offered 25. 000 dollars for you. Do you know what that means?”
“Ribbit, Ribbit, Ribbit!” James answered him in panic. He knew exactly what that meant, he would be sold and would never become human again, see his friends, family etc.
"RIBBIT! RIBBIT!"
"He's really agitated, what's wrong wid'et?"
“I’m sorry, James, you’ll leave your dear circus!” the Wizard said with a smile.
He gave a step forwards and got nearby the cage bars, so the tycoon wouldn’t listen. “This man will take you and unfortunately I believe we’ll never see ourselves again so I won’t be able turn you into a man again. Get used to your new body. It’s unfair, you didn’t ask for it…but that’s how life is. Born a man, die as an amphibious freak!”
