You quickly grab his wrist under the table to hold him still as you lean close to him. "Just a month ago," she say in a quiet but harsh tone. "And if you leak a word of this to anyone I will rip your throat out with my teeth." His eyes widened. "Do you understand." What frustrated her was that she could still smell fear coming off of him.
He nodded.
"Clearly?"
He nodded again.
"Good," she said, letting go and starting to down her expensive swill faster. She looked around. Nobody else seemed to had noticed or cared about their exchange.
"Will...," he stammered. "Will those in the hospital change on the next full moon or something?"
Jennifer almost choked on her last swigs. Without another word, she quickly stood up to leave. She bumped right into a familiar face. "Doll," said Kevin, loudly. "Hey! Where have you been!?" Kevin was one of the halfbacks for the football team. He had a good physique, but he was also the reason why the cheerleaders were one of the main reasons people came to their games. Many people claimed Kevin and his lot piqued in high school. Jennifer, after dating Kevin just TWICE recently, more believed his high point was in junior high. "And what are you doing with this dork?" He looked back at two others linemen who he often traveled with as his pack.
"Healing," said Jennifer, "and talking; in that order if you can't figure it out."
Kevin blinked. "I can talk in any order I want," he said offended. "I'm just glad to see you're still breathing. Jake and Mack heard that the fuckin' bear was released into the school by some lugheads from West Hampton, something having to do with their mascot or something. Not that I see a relation."
"Well," she said, trying to play dumb about the monster being a bear. "They are the Bruins."
Kevin nodded, looking confused. "Yeah. But what do hockey players have to do with bears? Anyway, since you're not like... dead or nuttin', I was thinkin'. You want to meet up again, tonight maybe?" He gave a grin which read, "and why wouldn't you want to."
Jennifer stared at him. She had told him three times they were done, and although one time she might had used too many syllables, he should had gotten the hint by now. Besides, she was more gunning to Allen Kregsty, the baseball team's top picture. If only Mindy Seller were always hanging off of him.
Wait, she thought. Didn't Paula say Mindy had once sucked her dick?
She shook her head to return to the present. "Not interested." Intentionally stepping away from Peter to keep their attention on her rather than him, she headed for the door. "We broke up. Remember?"
Kevin blinked dumbly, again, before running out after her. "Whoa. When?"
"Two weeks ago," she said. "And three weeks ago. How many times do I have to explain this to you?"
Kevin walked along side of her, still looking confused. "Once would be nice!"
Jennifer rolled her eyes. "We had this conversation last week!"
"Did not!"
"Yeah," said Robert, one of Kevin's shadows. "You did. Twice actually."
Marcus smirked. "It's only the fifth time somebody's shut you down, dude. Don't worry about it."
Kevin shook his head, "No. Nobody has ever broken up with me. I'd remember it." He paused. "I think.... I....." Jennifer slowed down and turned back toward Kevin. He suddenly quieted and stared off for a minute.
Robert bit his lip and put a hand on his shoulder. Marcus actually seemed to be counting down from five. At zero, Kevin blinked and looked up. "Oh. Sorry. I uh.... Hey, Jennifer. Good to see you alive. How are you doing? Want to go out tonight?"
Jennifer looked over Kevin's face for any sign of this being a joke. There wasn't. "Uh. No. I'm busy. Maybe another time."
He sighed, but nodded. "No problem. You're always my number one girl." He paused. "Not that there are any others, of course. Not many. Not... I'll talk to you later." With that, he headed off down the road. She grabbed Robert by the arm as he started to follow. Marcus noticed the hold up, but with a nod from Robert, Marcus went after Kevin.
"How long has he been doing that?" she asked him.
Robert frowned. "About a month. You'd think I was nuts, but I think a witch put a whammy on him."
"A witch?" she asked.
"Yeah," Robert said. "We celebrated our tie with Fauxdale during the second game a month back, and Kevin had a bit too much to drink. He grabbed the wheel from the passenger side, and our car hit some boxes sticking out of the alley near Summerbee and 10th. Some homeless woman claiming to be some rich and powerful former mayor of the town crawled out and started swearing at us. I tried to explain what happened, but she was pissed off at her home, the boxes, getting smashed. She swear, she cast a spell on Kevin using that old Transform or Dare legend. He said 'dare', and before she said anything, a look passed over her face. She looked sad, kinda regretful, but then she said, 'I hope as your life continues on long and well, and you only have good memories. I dare you to live your life like that.' And then she headed off. Since then, anytime Kevin gets annoyed or upset to some degree, he blanks out for a few seconds, and then bam. He just picks right up having forgot whatever set him off."
Jennifer's throat caught the moment Robert mentioned the "Transform or Dare" curse. She had to ask. "Has he ever tried to T&D somebody else?"
