A Game of Change

Following Avarros

added 6 years ago O

Figuring that a minotaur would most likely choose caves or caverns, Corbin used the now-massive and rugged mouse to guide the game character through some brush to the cavern entrance. He was startled as something brushed the outsides of his legs, and he looked down to see nothing there. There was also a strong bovine musk that must be from his new body, but he thought he could smell earth and plants and even a trace of saltwater from the nearby sea. Insects buzzed in the air, including large flies that landed and crawled on his muzzle and around his ears. He brushed at his large, soft nostrils in annoyance, then froze as he realized he was actually feeling the insects that were showing on the screen! The sensation on his legs had been the leaves of small plants that he'd walked through to get to the cavern.

Since he had been physically transformed into a minotaur, accepting the sensory input was not that big a deal. Well, that was not quite true. If he was feeling things, then getting hurt could be a serious problem. He paused at the entrance of the cavern and looked into the darkness. There were more scents here - another bovine scent, and another that he somehow identified as human. Both were faint, either old or coming from very deep within the cavern.

With a grunt, Corbin strode into the opening. The light grew dim the further he went inside, but he found that his eyesight adjusted to the darkness. Even as the sunlit entrance vanished from view, he could see his surroundings clearly in a washed-out sepia-tone with oddly sharp edges.

The scent changed to a dustier odor with strong earthy undertones. Corbin could feel the uneven surface and some small rocks under his hooves as he walked, and had to stop a moment to shake off the intensity of the sensations. For a moment there, it had seemed that he was actually in the cavern, not just watching a character on his monitor. His nostrils flared, drawing in the smell of the cavern, and he picked up the bovine and human scents again. They were separated now, and he quickly found a branch where the cavern split. The bovine smell came from the left branch, with a human scent coming from the right.

Corbin hesitated. He had to choose a direction. But the deeper he got, the more real this became. He was pretty sure that if he continued, he would actually end up inside the game, really in the cavern and not just a player. But what choice did he have? If he turned and went back, or quit, it sounded like he might be stuck as a minotaur. Not so bad in a game, but a real issue in the 'real' world.
