Her rampage had knocked out the power in the library. He cautiously poked his head into that smothering darkness and at once could see a soft glowing light from deep within the stacks. Picking his way over the wreckage of books and material strewn about the floor, his senses strained for any sign of Cowgirl.
She wasn't here, but he found what he had come for. Kneeling down, he reached under for the light, pulsing with the slow rhythm of a beating heart. Groping, his fingers grasp the remote and he pulls it out.
The face-plate is shattered.
Most of the buttons smashed, and even if he could push the buttons, there was no way to know what would happen, the readout, that helpful display was broken. Instead what he saw was a chaotic swirl of rainbow colors and symbols, of no known language or writing system he had ever seen.
Sighing, he took the remote in his hands and laid his hands in his lap. He was counting on the remote to fix everything. He needed a way to turn Cowgirl back to human. But that no longer seemed possible. He closed his eyes.
A warmth filled his body, pulsing and inviting, and he realized it was the remote. The device may be broken, but it was merely a vessel for the magic that powered it. As he held it in his hands, without knowing how, understanding filled his mind. The Magic imbued in the remote could fix everything, but it no longer worked at range. Todd would have to get the remote in contact with Cowgirl. And the Magic would make that possible. But Todd has messed things up big time. There would be consequences, a price to pay.
Guilt weighing heavily on his mind, Todd made his choice.
