The colonel put his hand on the doctor's shoulder, and said, "Doctor, what you are doing here is great and grand. It represents the survival of my crew, and possibly the human race. But I think we need to take a break. We need to be sure that these -uh- humorphs you've created are able to survive before we make more. So take a break, doctor."
"Uh, but colonel, I could still prep most of the crew without selecting their new forms right away. After all, we're using the stasis pods as the transformation capsules."
"Yes, about that? Why was it that we couldn't just put them in stasis until the rescue party came?"
"We're five years from earth at maximum velocity, and they just spent five years in stasis. More than 7 years in stasis can result in brain damage," explained the doctor knowingly.
"Yes, but I never heard that before, and weren't the people colonizing Gamma 17 going to be in stasis for 13 years?"
"Different type of stasis pod, and a bit experimental if you ask me," the doctor said in a confidential tone.
"Oh, well, you're the science wiz. I'll defer to you. The six you've already transformed should all be linked to the ship's monitors so we can track them?"
"Ya v-, uh, yes, sir."
"Good. Now you get some rest, doctor. I'll call you if we have any problems."
The doctor wheeled himself out of the conversion chamber room, and down the hallway to the lift. He rode the elevator to the 10th level, and exited. Alone in his private quarters. He stood up, and got out of his chair. The gravity in his quarters was Martian gravity, one-tenth of the rest of the ship's gravity. He was no longer confined to his wheelchair. He went to his entertainment module, and scrolled through the classics. "Ah, yes. Doktor Who und the Daleks!" The opposite wall flickered and became a television screen replaying old episodes of Dr. Who. From a compartment by his bed, Doctor Viktor Weirdlieb extracted some ancient worn action figures. He chuckled, the colonel didn't believe that stasis pods could produce mental illness, but the doctor knew from personal experience that it was true. It was fortunate that he was such a fine doctor that he knew how to treat himself after five decades in stasis, or was it fifteen decades? He wasn't sure. He shot his fist up in the air as the leader of the Kaled people Dr. Davros appeared on the screen, and shouted, "Go, Davros!"
