"'Four score and seven years ago...'" You barely listen as your history teacher drones on about Abraham Lincoln. You sigh and look down at your books. You're in the back of the class, so surely he won`t see you! You remove one of your favorite books, Foxcraft, from the stack and flip to the bookmarked pages. One of the reasons why you like this book so much is because of the transformation scenes. Secretly, you long to walk on four legs and talk to animals. 'Her black ears seemed to be growing longer. Her brush shot out and fluffed up behind her. Her legs seemed taller, so much taller...; The fox cub's snout seemed to curve before her, and her ginger fur darkened into red.' You read these lines over and over.
You hear a loud cracking noise and look up to see your teacher doubled over. Your class lets out a gasp of horror. You start to panic. What if he's having a heart attack?!
A few of your classmates run over to help. As they bend over the teacher they suddenly fly back and hit the wall as if someone had pushed them out of the way. They too double over, arms crossed over their stomach. Your friend, Nate, jumps up and runs to the door, but he flies back and lands on the floor as if a barrier had blocked him. He then, too, doubles over.
"What's going on...?" Your other friend, Alice, whispers into your ear. You shrug, trying to stay calm, but your heart is in your throat.
You scream as everyone else topples to the floor. You stand there in horror as the changes begin.
Foxcraft is an actual book by Inbali Iserles and published by Scholastic. I own no part of it whatsoever. (I say this because I'd rather NOT get arrested for plagirism.)
