What Snow Does In Summer

added 7 years ago BM I S O

Nothing happened. Not even a flash of light like before. You look at Keith, still stark naked and cupping his junk in his hands to hide it away, looking more uncomfortable by the minute. He gives you a sharp look and you shrug your shoulders. "Hey, I pressed the button! I can't help it if nothing happened".

Keith stepps towards you, standing his full height and glowers down at you. He growled "You better get that thing fixed right now or you're giving me your clothes, got it?".

You push him away slightly, saying "OK dude, jeez! Cool it a minute! Now let's see...". You fumble with the keys, point them at your pissed off friend and press the button. This time, a bright flash engulfed Keith, intense enough that you look away for a moment. "See? It just needed a bit of time to work. Now let's get ba....".

Your words trail off as the white light fades. In the place where Keith was standing was now, quite impossibly, a quintessential-looking snowman. It had three perfectly round spheres stacked on top of each other. Two large, spindly branches stuck out either side of the middle and several black rocks dotted down the centre. More rocks took the place of the eyes and mouth, while a bright orange carrot nose jutted out from the face. A striped scarf and fancy top hat completed the look. You stare gobsmacked at the snowman sitting in front of you like it had jumped out of a Christmas card.

"Keith...?" You question quietly, taking a step closer, examining the icy figure. It couldn't be your friend right? Sure the keys had changed your car, twice, and evaporated Keith's clothing but it couldn't do... this? It was impossible! Shaking slightly, you slowly reach out and poke the middle section of snow. Your finger slips easily through the wet slush. You yank your hand away and then curiously place it back on the snow. It felt freezing cold, a welcome relief on this recording breaking hot day. You briefly consider grabbing a handful and rubbing it over your body but shake your head at the thought, remembering this snowman was your best friend. Maybe. It was difficult to wrap your head around the realisation that magic actually existed, and that it could turn a living human being into an inanimate object.

Sighing, you step away from the snowman and wipe your wet hand on your shirt. It was like you had dunked it underwater. You freeze in place and glance back to the snowman in horror. You were so absorbed in wondering if it was Keith that you hadn't noticed it was melting! No longer did it look perfect, it was beginning to slouch to one side and drip water onto the hot pavement. The scarf was very damp while the top hat had slightly sunk into the head. The two branch arms were slowly slipping downwards, and the rocks had started to slide down its face, turning its smile into a frown. You yelp in panic, if this snowman really was your friend then melting in the heat is the last thing you wanted to happen!

You reach for the car keys, only to find them not in your pocket. You must have dropped them when you noticed Keith had changed. Looking around, you spot them on the floor partially submerged in the expanding puddle of your melting buddy. You grab them quickly, point them at the snowman and press the unlock button. Nothing happened. You press the button again and nothing happened. There was a small thud as the snowman's right arm branch fell out and hit the ground. You're in full panic mode now. What if getting the keys wet had broken them? Or maybe they needed to recharge like last time? If you don't figure something out soon, all that'll be left of Keith is some foliage and an evaporated puddle. It didn't help that you were drawing some attention from passers-by, curious as to why there was a half-melted snowman sitting in a gas station in the middle of summer. Wiping the keys as dry as you could, you point them at Keith again and press the button.
