Now before the Chronivac had been developed and became a
common plaything of
bored teenagers, its time space and reality and dimension changing
technologies had to have been invented.
You can blame Prime Minister Mackenzie Ross
of Canada for that.
Though he did a fair enough job as a wartime leader, privately he
was scribbling journals about how if he crouched down and looked in a light of sight
between the twitching ears of his pet german shepherd bitch Flora
he could see what his dog saw,the misty grey outline
of his dead mother risen from the grave.Or so he claimed in his
journals.
So whilst Winston Churchill was spending his nations resources on developing the
computer and Franklin Roosevelt was using his to
make the A bomb,Canada's wartime PM
was envisaging transformational technologies.
So the first functional TF'g machine, the
primitive vacuum powerd Kanadraene 1,9
hummed into life in a secret location somewhere up in the barrens
of northern Canada in May 5 1945.
Being a rather primitive machine, turning a person into a mouse or changing their sex was way beyond the capability of the Kanadraene
Back then it was more about giving a little more muscle to the
"Rosie the Rivettor " type women who
were frantically building the bombers and Victory cargo ships
that Britain so desperately needed.
The lead Canadian research scientist had been a Dr Wilma Ivey Verna
DrakkenFyre and as you can tell by her name the DrakkenFyre clan
had this thing about big scaly flamebreathing
reptiles.
It was her granddaughter Fiona Ira DrakkenFyre who'd developed
some of the mechanical parts for the Chronivac 1.0 in the
late 1960's.,which coincidentally was when the TF craze first
came to the attention of the startup Chronivac Corporation.
She had a thing about dragons as well.
And she had a thing about bringing back to life all the old
TF machines her mother had developed when Fiorna was a
little girl, especially "Mother',as the scientists in the community refered
to Kanadraene 1.9
People had for decades though the machine had been smashed up in the 1960s and melted down for scrap, but when
seventy six year old Fiona had gone up to the northern wilds where
it had been built in the 1940's
shed been shocked and pleased to discover the quonset hut and research base outbuildings
still at their original location,a little buried under the 33 foot snow drifts,.
According to her mother the Kanadraene had sat in a underground cavern
parked right in the middle of a radium deposit.
So she'd mushed on her huskies, and found the hatch
leading down to the machine.
The big black huge hulking Kanadraene ,transmutor coils and chrono-capacitors
were still intact, and though mice and rats had chewed away at the wiring,it looked like Fiona had found a
do-able restoration project.
Now the Chronivac Corporation and her were no longer
on speaking terms.
That was bad, because the Canadian Secret Service, sometime in the
intravening decades ,had removed the TF heart of the Kanadraene,
its highly obscure and vitally necessary
<What you wish is what you are" black box.
The kind of device the wartime Canadian goverment
had spent billions inventing and
which the Chronivac Corporation had spent even more
billions re-inventing in the 1960s.
Without the WyWiWyA ,restoring the Kanadraene
was pointless, since all Fiona would have is a three story
tall campstove good for nothing but heating up a
iron skillets worth of beans and bacon.
Now Chronivac Corporation was not going to lend the
scientist it was having a legal battle with
one of their WyWiWyA's
nor was buying a used Chronivac 4.0 a good idea
as all current and former Chronivac Corporation
employees had to submit to some genetic alteration that ensured
if they jerked around with Chronivac Corp, they wouldn't
be jerkin around for long.
So no,tearing apart a Chronivac 4.0 would
simply set off the 'sentience bomb ' Fiona had
wired into her DNA.
However if she could lay her hands on
someone who had been subjected to the effects of a
Chronivac 4.0's WyWiWyA gizmo,
Fiona knew she could substittute that person
for the missing WyWiWyA she needed to get
the 'campstove' doing something useful.
