The majority of the Nimitz Air Force was in a plains area, but there was a lot more to see after checking over the base. The traffic control tower had to be renovated with all the latest equipment for tracking and guiding planes down on instruments. The old hanger had lost several sections of metal in different places and had to be torn down later. The reinforced bunker was the most intact, and was planned to be used to grow tropical fruits and nuts without them invading the natural environment.
Above all, Mieni Atoll had gotten the least amount of radiation during the tests, and it was already gone, but what was the most surprising was that, apart from the development of the Air Force base, nobody ever did a detailed exploration of the island, which is why they never discovered the true potential.
Mieni Atoll actually had enough land to support a small, yet thriving tropical rain forest. The biggest thing about it was that there were several species on the island that were undocumented and/or never seen before. One such species was a species of frog that had transparent skin, but clearly visible organs and muscles. Another was a species of monkey that seemed to be a cross between a sugar glider and a lemur. This would prompt a research station being built on the island to study the newly discovered species, and also do some uplifting of certain new species to see what effect the Animalia virus would have, the newly discovered see-through frogs being a prime choice (but only one male and one female each).
There was also a pristine barrier coral reef near the northernmost part of the island, which only had the radiation from the tests cause the life there to develop bioluminescence. This discovery furthered the need to have a research station on the island, both to study the life there, and to test the virus on certain aquatic creatures, the sea snake, sea turtle, and moray eel among them. This would also inspire people to have as little impact on the environment as possible, whether on land or sea.
There was a large sandy place which would be perfect for a beach resort, but in an ambitious attempt to harm the environment as little as possible, the "resort hotel" would be a generous amount of "huts" made of all-natural materials, yet with modern amenities: one for the main office and gift shop, others for tourists, and a few for land-based Animalians. There was also contact made with a business that specialized in creating artificial reefs, and asking them to make "reef huts" for the aquatic members of the future Animalia community.
Ran had already entered the waters, both to resoak his dry scales, and to look for abandoned drift nets. He had already found some, and he had also found a female great white shark interested in his scent. He had been given a hypodermic needle filled with Animalian virus in case he found a mate willing to be with him. After she had been uplifted and had things explained to her, Ran's new mate, calling herself "Gaz" was introduced to Clara, Robbie, and the liaison giving them the base.
Ran had also discovered a large pearl oyster bed on the eastern side of the island. Those oysters were grown several sizes larger than standard pearl oysters, but the larger pearls inside of them weren't discovered until after Ran and Gaz brought several of them back. These new pearls would actually sell for quite a bit more than standard pearls, after they were confirmed to be inert and not radioactive.
There was also enough room in the plains area to have a full restaurant/luau area, and it was decided to have everything but the main kitchens be outdoors. There were also decorative "wind spinners" that caught the wind no matter what direction it was blowing in, but were actually a prototype for a new kind of wind turbine designed to generate electricity for the resort, alongside new, experimental, "tidal power generators. The goal was to create a community that could sustain itself with as little impact on the environment as possible.
All in all, what was formerly Nimitz Air Force Base would be easily converted to Animalia Tropical Island Reserve and Resort. The island was confirmed to be the least touched by the nuclear tests, and a great way to allow Animalia to sustain saltwater Animalians, raise money for Animalia in general, raise awareness for fragile ecosystems, and reveal to the world new species that had never been discovered before.
