After a while the wizard retreated to leave James alone with his new owner.
"I'm really sorry about all of this, honestly" Kayla half smiled. James almost wanted to believe her.
"Then turn me back!" James replied with exasperation.
Kayla giggled "It's so funny seeing you talk when you're a...you know"
"Yeah, hilarious" James sighed.
"Look, even if I didn't think it was a dumb idea there is no way I am powerful enough to reverse one of my fathers spells. I'm afraid you're stuck like that for a while. Maybe I can persuade him to give you a week off for good behaviour"
"Great"
"Look, at least we can get to know each other better now we can actually communicate" Kayla smiled. She sat down on a chair at the desk James was sitting on, so her giant beautiful face was bearing right down on him.
"Yeah, that's easy for you to say" James huffed "I mean it's kind of cool to get to know a witch and everything but this is awful. I mean, what do I even eat?"
Kayla wordlessly waved her hand and a small group of flies appeared around James' head.
"Ah, that's gross!" James complained.
"Try it!" Kayla insisted.
In spite of himself, James shot out his amphibian tongue and snared a fly. Not too bad. He quickly helped himself to another.
Kayla giggled again.
"See, it's not so bad!" she encouraged her toad cursed new friend.
