Carl led the woman he knew as Janet into a nice little resturaunt in a hotel near the waterfront. "I'm just here for the convention," he mentioned, "so this is the only place that I know. I hope it's okay."
Jeff smiled and nodded, "It's lovely." She looked looked at him, amazed by how comfortable all this was. A couple hours ago, she wouldn't have even considered that she'd be having lunch, a lunch date at that, with a handsome guy.
They chatted. Jeff tried to stay vauge about Janet, implying that she had no real family and that she was a bit hard up because of some recent changes in her life. None of that was exactly a lie, of course. At the moment her family wouldn't reconize this young woman as their son.
She learned that Carl was a young auto engineer, unmarried, and just a few years out of school. "What were you doing at the auto show?" he asked after a little while, "Working as a model?"
She smiled and sipped on her third glass of wine, "I was looking for.. . a freind I thought was working today, but couldn't find her." She sippped on the wine again, "Do you have to go back to the convention right away?" she asked, surprising herself a little.
Carl stood up and took her hand, "We could go for a little walk, if you'd like." He paid the check and led her out of the resturaunt. "Do you mind if I run up to my room for a minute to just drop off the stuff from the convention?" he asked hefting a small plastic bag full of freebies he'd collected that morning.
Jeff, increasingly thinking of herself as Janet, took his arm, "Not at all, if you don't mind not me not letting you out of my sight."
they strolled over the elevator, and a few minutes later found themselves in his room. He dropped the bag on a stuffed chair and turned back to her. "So, what would you like to do?"
