Normal merfolk live for about 3 centuries at most but a royal mermaid lives for a millennia (1000 years). For the first 16 years, every merfolk will age like a human and it is the same with royal merfolk. Once they are 16 there bodies will age at 1/5 of how a human would age.
Merfolk will undergo a metamorphosis over there life. Their tail will grow by a metre every 50 years except royal merfolk that grow a metre every 10 years and the only exception to this is when they are under 16. Every merfolk once 16 will have a 3 metre tail and the colour is dependant on bloodline.
Merfolk bodies will go through a different aging process to human. Humans age by peaking with youth and then dropping down into wrinkle. Merfolk will age by their bodies ever more defined until there death. Males become more muscular and gain strength with increased sperm releasing while women gain feminine charms like defined waist and chest and also increased fertility like milk production and egg releases. Merfolk do have there hair become more silvery the older they are do you can tell a merfolk age by their tail, hair and body.
As a self defence they use their tail to suffocate attackers unless they are juvenile merfolk then they normally stick with adults. Reproduction us similar to human except that there is a flap that covers the penis or vagina of merfolk which is covered in scales and opens up during sex and excretion. There also is another flap that covers your anus.
Breathing works through gills that you can find on your waist. They naturally breath water and if you surface above the Water, you can't stay long as merfolk can stay an hour above water before going back into the sea. Speech works perfectly underwater and above water if you talk to a human or another merfolk above water. Everything else functions like a normal human from organs to digestion.
