Elaborate story short:
Angela married Tom when they got pregnant with David. It didn't work out because Tom traveled out of the country on business constantly for months on end. Angela remarried Steve, who adopted David. Angela died tragically in a car accident leaving Steve to raise David alone.
Steve was bitter, he expected children of his own. He expected a wife to come home to. He expected so much more than what he had. To make it worse, David and Steve could not relate to one another, painfully so.
David would play on the computer for hours, if it wasn't a video game, he would be skyping with people playing some sort of game involving character sheets and weird dice. David tried explaining it to Steve once but Steve turned the conversation into how David should be outside more and David now uses headphones and shuts the door while he's playing.
David, now 13, is equally bitter. He knows Steve really owes him nothing, but Steve is all he is left with. All he seems to care about is sports and though David tries, he can't feign interest for even a full minute. Steve is oblivious to pop culture, has awful taste in music, doesn't care about art, science, or philosophy, and he can't help with math, history, language, or civics, he hates video games, or games where he has to think.
Steve is a professional mechanic, enjoys physical and motor sports. He used to try to relate to David but the constant failure has left him at a loss and he even feels unappreciated for his efforts. Angela would have been 37 this year, Steve likes older women, which is why he was willing to accept a divorcee with a kid. It made him feel super manly somehow, knowing that he could replace an older, wiser, wealthier man, unfortunately it didn't work out for him.
The Chronivac was delivered, as they are, with a congratulations letter and cryptic allusions. Steve read through it very quickly as there was a game on tonight. "Congratulations Steve, We are pleased... present you.. newest, pre-release... You were hand selected... fully functional... no cost to you... live your wildest dreams..." He went back and reread, "Chronivac Software Version 4.58.98CX8."
He shuffled some packing peanuts around and found what almost looked like a weird mix between a desk lamp and a toy gun of some kind. He tried plugging it in but the USB cable wouldn't fit the electrical socket. He grabbed his cell phone charger and took out the micro USB portion that charged his phone, and replaced the cord with the one attached to the Chronivac emitter and it began charging.
He then took the CD, plugging it into the the computer and the program loaded. Upon starting the program halted demanding the emitter be connected. Steve went into the wifi settings and didnt see the emitter as an option, he also didnt see and bluetooth settings on the pc. The only PC experience he had was from work and that was a multimeter, a tool to read vehicle error codes, and the terminal to input what he is fixing. Beyond basic use of a mouse and keyboard he was nearly helpless...
