Not in Kansas Anymore

added 5 years ago O

You shake your head, willing the strange sapphire to disappear, even if your fortune goes with it, but no luck. When you look down, it is still there, shining beautifully. You want to panic, but what good is that going to do? You're stuck in the middle of the woods, it's not like you can go to a hospital and get it surgically removed right now. Trying desperately to put it out of your mind, you remove the rest of your clothes, wrap yourself in your jacket, and huddle by the fire. Eventually, the crazy, exciting, maddening day gets the better of you, and you nod off.

Groggily, you hear the "drip, drip" of the remants of the previous night's rain falling from the entrance of the cave. Squinting your eyes open, you see daylight streaming in from the entrance, as well as a burnt-out pile of ashes where your fire once was. It takes a few moments for you to remember the night before, causing you to sit up in alarm. You are afraid to look down, but after gritting your teeth and praying under your breath, you grimace downward at your chest - only to see the sapphire sparkle in the morning sun.

"Oh, crap!" you shout to no one in particular. It wasn't a dream. You sit there for a while, debating what to do, but eventually realize there is no point in sitting around the cave all day when your stomach growls. Reaching for your clothes, you sigh in relief that at least they have dried overnight, and you put them on. Before you button up your shirt, you gingerly touch the sapphire. Like the night before, although it is hard, it doesn't feel particularly cold to the touch, and where your skin meets the sapphire is not painful or irritated. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that you could plainly see it, you wouldn't even know it was there. Frowning, you carefully button up your shirt enough to cover the sapphire well and don your jacket.

You have no idea where to go, since you completely lost your sense of direction yesterday, but in order to keep yourself from going in circles, you decide to head in the direction of the sun, hoping it will get you out. After all, it will be indicating generally east until it gets to the top of the sky, at which point all you have to do is face away from the sun. But hopefully it won't take you that long to find civilization. After all, you were in a park, weren't you?

Stumbling along for hours, your stomach gnawing at itself, you reach noon with no sign of a trail or road. In a starving stupor, you turn your back to the sun and continue on your way, trudging through the fallen trees and rocks numbly. In fact, you are so wiped out, you don't even realize that as the sun begins to drop in the sky, the trees are beginning to thin out. Just concentrating on putting one foot in front of the other, your surroundings don't register until you hear a loud yell.

"Oy there, what d'ye think ye're doing? That wood be forbidden! D'ye wish to anger the gods?" A voice hollered in your direction. Shocked to hear anything, you look up to see...
