Curiosity gets the better of you, and despite your sense of foreboding, you cautiously lift the amulet above your head and gingerly lower the heavy golden chain around your neck. Inch by inch, you watch the amulet lower in front of your face, and when it is finally around your neck, you exhale in relief and grin at your own foolishness. Of course nothing was going to happen. Smirking, you let go of the amulet, which falls down to rest on your bosom.
Without warning, you feel a jolt throughout your entire body the instant the amulet lands on your chest. For a second, you wonder if you were hit by lightning. Blinking and shaking your head, you leap to your feet and examine yourself, relieved to find that everything seems to be working. No char marks or burns indicate that lightning has struck nearby, but you didn't just imagine that feeling. Uneasily, you finally sit back down, and lift up the amulet to put it back in your pocket.
However, just as you lift the amulet with your hand, your thumb slips into a gap in the center of the pendant. Petrified, you rip off the chain and stare at the pendant. The beautiful, gorgeous sapphire which was going to make you famous...is missing. All that remains is a large gap in the setting, and no indication of what occurred. Frantic, you jump up and begin searching the area around you. Surely it just fell out and is sitting somewhere nearby. After an eternity of fruitless groping, you begin to realize that it may be lost to you forever. Cold and dejected, you flop down miserably on the rock next to your fire, which is beginning to die out. Since the rain shows no signs of subsiding, you grab a handful of sticks and begin feeding your fire, building it up to a healthy size. You are still sopping wet, and you are probably not getting out anytime soon. Standing up, you begin to remove your clothes to dry them by the fire, deciding that your jacket will keep you warm while you wait.
After your jacket, the first article of clothing you remove is your dripping shirt. Shaking out your hair, you lay your shirt across another rock and look down to remove your bra, when a bright glint catches your eye. Reaching up in shock, you touch a hard surface, but it seems almost warm and alive. Nestled just above your breasts flush with your skin is the sapphire, as though it were a part of you.
With a finger, you trace the edges to find some lip, some gap which you can use to pry it from your skin, but there is none. Your chest heaves as you gasp for breath, terrified at what just happened. How can you explain this to anyone? But more than that, what if there is more to come?
