"Patrick, it's clear that the privileges you possess as a cishet white man in our society aren't making you any happier. What if you could give them up?"
"How? I couldn't go the Rachel Dolezal route even if I wanted to, which I don't. It would be the ultimate cultural appropriation."
"That's not what I'm talking about. I am talking about permanently, irreversibly giving up every privilege you possess as a white man to start a new life as a strong black woman dealing with all the crap that society puts black women through but actually fighting for social justice rather than angsting about it."
"That cannot be possible."
"Suppose it was?"
"I wouldn't want to lose Sandra."
"That's a very important point. Patrick, could you excuse us for a moment while I talk to Sandra?"
Patrick left, with obviously a lot on his mind.
Sandra spoke. "You can actually do that?"
"Yes, we can actually do that. The question is how do you feel about it? Could you stay with what Patrick becomes?"
"Part of what attracted me to him was the fact that he doesn't buy all that male bullshit. He's gentle, and he talks about his feelings. I've been with women before, I suppose you know that."
"Yes, we used an ancient, esoteric magical technique known as 'reading your Facebook.'"
"Even if he thinks he knows, he doesn't know. He's going to need someone."
"She will. But it doesn't have to be you."
"I know it doesn't have to, but, I really think this might help. Get him, her, to stand up for herself, spread her wings and fly." Sandra gave a quick laugh. "And besides, at least it won't be boring!"
Rain brought Patrick back into the room. "Sandra has something to say to you."
"Patrick, boo. Whatever you decide, I'll stand with you. It's going to take more than this to break us up."
After a lingering embrace, Patrick turned to Rain. "How exactly would this work?"
