With a flash of light, your landlord is obscured, and when the light fades, a roll of toilet paper bounces off the toilet lid, then onto the ground, rolling along until it runs into your feet.
You stare down at the roll of toilet paper, snugged. "Mr. Edwards?" you venture.
The roll of toilet paper doesn't respond.
"Hey, what happened to that guy?" Stephen asks, the toilet turning as if looking around.
You pick up the roll of toilet paper. "N-Nothing. Don't worry about it."
"Oh no. Did something happen to him? Did you use the keys on him?"
"He was about to flush you!"
"You can't just keep using those things willy nilly. That's why we had the test!"
"I know, but did you really wanna appear to some dude with your pants jizzed?"
The toilet pauses at this. "Well, I guess not, but..."
"This is not ideal, but this saves us some trouble while we figure things out." You set the roll of toilet paper on Stephen's tank lid. "Now just stay calm and I'll try the test. By the way, how do you want me to test the keys?"
Stephen gave a bubbling sigh. "I set up four objects and wrote out some exercises. Try the focusing on changing the objects into what's suggested. If you can do that, you have a chance of fixing everyone. If not, we're all doomed."
"No pressure, eh? Sit tight, buddy." You close the custodian closet door.
You find the piece of paper with Stephen's notes next to test area. Within the taped off area there's a brick, an apple, a toaster, and a rat in a cage, apparently busy licking himself in awkward areas. You roll your eyes and look back to the notes.
First thing Stephen wanted you to try was focusing on the red brick, then turning it to white marble. Boring, but sensible first test. You lifted the key, aiming it at the brick, focusing on the brick, thinking of the red brick turning into a block of marble. You hit the button. That now-familiar flash covers the brick and...the brick had changed. You look closer. White marble! You'd done it! You'd made the change. Now what next?
The apple. Stephen wanted you to try turning it into a pineapple. You focused and concentrated once again. You almost felt like a wizard doing this. You pressed the button again. Another flash and, tah-DAH! There was a pineapple standing in place of the apple.
You moved right along to the old toaster, which looked like it was rescued from the garbage. You decided to try your own change this time. A press of the button and the toaster was replaced by toast, smothered with jam. You went close enough to sniff. Raspberry. You were getting good at this.
Now, the rat. The notes suggested turning the rat into something inanimate, then changing it back into a rat. You put your focus on the rat. The rat continued to do rude cleaning rituals on his junk. You press the button and there was the flash, and in the cage was a wedge of cheese. Swiss, to be exact. Yes! Now, you just needed to turn the rat back, then you would feel confident about Keith and the others back to normal.
You focus deeply on the wedge of swiss cheese, putting the image of the rat in your mind, and just as you're about to press the button, Sarah enters. "Hey! What's taking you so long down here?"
You press the button.
