You're not sure what this fungus is capable of, but you definitely don't want to find out. If that stuff grows that quickly on shoes, you don't want to imagine how it affects flesh.
You try looking at the trees around you to try to find a path, but you can't see anything resembling one. Trying to orient yourself, you look through a nearby patch of oak trees and see there's a stream heading downhill past them. You know your cabin is downhill too, and has a stream nearby, so following the stream is worth a shot. Of course, there's no guarantee that this is the same one.
You walk over and start following along the stream's bank, carefully stepping over the patches of mushrooms in the grass as you go. Without your missing shoe, the mud on the stream's edge soaks into your sock, making squelching noises as you go. Though to be honest, as the silt soaks through the fabric and gets between your toes, you have to admit it feels pretty nice.
After half an hour or so, you finally catch sight of your cabin a bit ahead, in the middle of a clearing in the distance. Guess this was the right stream after all. Just then, you hear the distant rumble of thunder, and rain starts pouring down in the distance, just behind your cabin. Within seconds, the cabin is already drenched, and it looks like the storm will reach where you are in a few minutes.
If you stay here, the trees overhead should protect you from the worst of the rain, and your feet are already sore from the walk, but if you run for it then you'll be inside and dry after a few minutes in the downpour. You decide to...
