Among all the clearly broken and dirty items in the bin, you find a polished necklace with a golden chain and a pendant in the shape of an eye. The necklace is in really good condition, which is pretty surprising. It had to be worth at least $100, and eye pendant is beautiful. The iris is a strange gem you haven't seen before, with a pool of dark blue in the middle and green flecked with gold around it. If nothing else, this would make a good gift for your girlfriend.
"Hey, how much for this?" You say, walking up to the old man behind the counter. He looks at you with a smile before seeing the necklace. His smile turns into a frown, and he then sighs. "Are you sure you want that, boy?" he asks, a serious look in his eyes.
His gaze makes you a bit nervous, and you say, "Well, yeah. It's beautiful. It's also 75% off."
The old man sighs again, and says, "It was in the faulty bin for a reason. You see, that necklace was made by a wizard who sought to punish people for their envy. So he made that necklace, which has the power to swap traits between people. Whoever wears it can exchange any trait of themselves for an equivalent trait of someone else. Want to be a basketball star? You can swap your height with the team MVP. Want to be a genius? You can swap your intelligence with a prodigy. And no one will be aware of the swap except for you. They'll just think you've always been that way. You can also swap other people, with you being the only one aware. Sound good?"
"I guess..." you say quietly. This old guy clearly hadn't taken his meds.
"But!" he said suddenly. "Whenever you swap with someone or something between others, you'll swap something with a random person in a 100 meter radius of you. It doesn't matter if they're in a building, in the air, or even underground. Anyone is eligible. And the thing you swap with them won't be random. It'll be a part of themselves that they don't like. Remember the MVP? Well, when you swap with him, you might gain the weight of the obese waterboy. The same rules for awareness apply. If you swap back, you'll just gain someone else's unwanted trait, and so on. Most of the faulty items are broken somehow, but that one was messed up from the start. So, I'll ask you again-are you sure you want that necklace?"
You looked stoic on the outside, but on the inside, you were laughing your ass off. The old man probably put it in the faulty bin by accident, and didn't want you to buy it. His story reeked of bullshit, so you were pretty confident he was lying. Or nuts. Probably both.
"I'll take the risk," you say, barely holding back your smile.
"Okay, fine. But I can't sell this to you in good conscience. It's free. Take it." You were stunned. 'This old man must really be off his rocker...' you think to yourself.
"I'll also give you a free reset. When you see how horrible that necklace it, come back here and I'll change you back to normal. Have a good day."
You walk out of the store, holding the necklace in your hand. You still can't believe he gave it to you for free. The weird part is, he seemed pretty lucid for a crazy old guy. Maybe there was some truth to this. You smiled. Time for a test!
