Jared slowly came around, blinking under some pretty bright lights.
"Steady, girl," she heard from somewhere. She lay on the ground for a few moments before she remembered. Jared was a doe, and she vaugly remembered getting hit by a car.
Her head was swimming, but she realized that she was at a vets office. She could smell dogs, cats and other animals all around. She had the vauge notion that she was sedated.
She could feel the vets hands skillfully checking her over before standing up and walking out of the room. Jared realized that she was in a stall of some sort, probebly for horses or other large animals. She wanted to stand up, but found that she couldn't work up the energy.
"She'll be okay, Mr. Phillips," she heard the vet say from the hall. "You winged her pretty good, but there don't seem to be any broken bones. She was knocked out cold, but she's starting to wake up."
"That's good to hear. What are you going to do with her now?" asked another male voice.
"We'll keep her here for a few days to make sure she's all right, then we'll look into her ownership. She's a rare doe, a Florida Key deer, not native to these parts. Not by a longshot. She probebly escaped from the City zoo or a private enclosure. If we can't find her owner, then we might have her transported to Florida."
Jared felt her heart sink. If they sent her to Florida, she might never be human again!
