( a 300 square mile citadel is one mother of a lot of area,so I'll
assume the citadel covers
one square mile
and those outer walls with the gatehouse are set
up as a triangle, the base lower down and the
top most point higher up)
Luckily for Ilvir and Kitty
there was a weedy tree growing tall and strong
at the base of the hole, which was actually a access
tunnel from the surface leading
to a network of criss crossing service tunnels
3 floors down underground.
So crash went the two intruders as they landed on the uppermost leafy canopy
of their saviour.
Ilvir carefully climbed down the tree till he
got to the floor
and there on the floor lay the badly corroded
iron grate that had
once covered over the hole.
The iron bolts that had once held the iron grate
into its base
troublingly enough
had not broken due to rust
but looked like they had been sheared away somehow.
Ilvir knew what that meant
not all the shadows in this citadel
were wispy bits of mist
some still packed a punch
Kitty had come down the tree
sniffed at the iron grate and
let off a eerie wailing sound, which echoed back and forth
in the tunnels.
Cursing the spawn inwardly,Ilvir ignored the racket
and oriented himself in the direction of that palace
he'd seen above ground.
That was fairly easy as the service tunnel heding in that
direction had a smll "Crown" symbol above its
entranceway.
Then they came across the first tomb robber a ways into the
Palace Tunnel.
The fellow ws no more then a skeleton by this point
and from the looks of his elongated skull,
had been a drago-man.Beside him /or her lay the rotting sack with tomb robbers tools
inside.
They continued up the tunnel and soon came across the mummified body of a femle dwarf, lying on her face and with her
outstretched arm holding onto a sack
out of which were
flung more modern tomb robber tools.
They continued and just at the hatch lay the freshest and most recent corpse.
It was that of a woodlands elf
and the fellow's face
was a horror to behold
because his unseeing eyes were wide open
and his lips were pulled back in a rictus
grin of pure terror.
