Certain you cannot let anyone see you like this, you quickly duck under the water. Since it is a moonless night, the only source of light is the lamplight from inside your beach rental. Surprisingly, you find you can hear particularly well through the water, almost as though you were still in air. Noting the direction the footsteps are approaching from, you plaster yourself along the bottom of the pool right up against the edge the footsteps are approaching from. As they near the pool area, you hear them stop.
"Excuse me, is everything all right? I thought I heard someone yell," you hear a male voice with a British accent say. Receiving no response, the footsteps approach the edge of the pool. "Must have been the next house over," the voice mutters, and you hear the footsteps recede. Relieved, you finally breathe again. However, you are sufficiently shaken that you do not surface. In fact, you are at a loss as to what to do.
You are fairly certain that even if there was no one around, you still could not make it to the beach in your condition. Getting back into the house is a possibility, although then you would probably end up stuck in the bathtub, which is an even less attractive option than the pool. You drift slowly along the bottom of the pool, but keep yourself close to the side in case the stranger comes back. However, what will you do when the sun rises? Not only will you be plainly visible to any passersby, you will be stuck in this concrete container all day. Your thoughts go round and round in your head as you swim back and forth in your pool. Eventually, the stress, confusion, and sheer oddity of the situation tires you out, and before you know it, you have fallen asleep at the bottom of the pool.
Hours later, you suddenly awaken to find...
