CYOTF (Human)

The fine print

added by Felthry 5 years ago O

As tempting as self-sex sounded, you did want to know what was going on, and learn more about your new condition. You've got a full day at least, so you decide to first take a look at the terminal.

It's a textual interface, rather old-fashioned in appearance. The cursor is currently blinking next to a prompt, asking for a command. You aren't sure what commands are valid, but you can make a guess: you type `help` and press enter.

The screen clears itself and what looks like something straight out of an 80s DOS program comes up, a digital manual with a table of contents showing on the first page. You scan through the entries until you find one that looks like what you need: "Restrictions on copy activity".

::Restrictions on copy activity
::
::Type-1 copies are the most advanced, and, thus, have the most restrictions on how they may be safely used. While all restrictions will eventually be lifted given enough time, type-1 restrictions take longer to be removed. The main restrictions, and the only ones likely to be of interest to the average user, are as follows:
:::Type-1 copies must have the form donor and consciousness donor fields set to the same value. For information on how to obtain a type-1 copy that is not identical to the consciousness donor, see section [transferring copies], [upgrading copies], or [modifying copies]. This restriction lifts after no more than twenty-four hours.
:::Until restrictions are lifted, type-1 copies must remain within a certain distance (approximately 60 meters) of the consciousness donor. This allows effective inter-body communication until long-range links can be established. It can take up to one week for this restriction to lift.
:::Type-1 copies cannot be modified (including transferring) until all other restrictions are lifted.
:::No type-1 copy can...

It continues for some time, but none of the other restrictions seem relevant to the current situation. They all refer to increasingly contrived circumstances and have increasingly short timeouts. The distance limitation is clearly what your girlfriend was talking about, though; if the clones have to stay close to the original, then of course she wouldn't be able to leave one with you. And checking the "Types of copies" section, you see that your girlfriend does, in fact, have three of the type-1 copies that the document referred to. Yours is apparently a type-4.

You notice that your second body feels increasingly natural. You're able to use both bodies without much trouble now, though you still can't seem to focus on multiple things at once. Your mind wanders, thinking about the possibilities, about what you can do with this machine...
