"I wish that Lucy would become a blonde, and Marissa a brunette." I then threw the die onto my parent's coffee table. It stopped rolling at 14, then began to glow.
"Oh, so the die has an LED in it," Marissa said. "Not very... Impressive..." She went quiet as she felt a tingle in her scalp. Curiously, she pulled a lock of her hair down in front of her eyes, finding it to now be a light brown shade, much like Lucy's.
"Marissa, I don't think she's pulling one over on us," Lucy said, looking at her friend's new hair color, then at her own. It was as if the two had swapped their natural colors, and it had all happened in an instant.
"Told you!" I said. "So, how do you like my new toy?"
"It seems it really can grant wishes," Marissa said. "How does it work?"
"You just make a wish, then throw it," I said. "Just like I did a second ago."
"Well, I figured that much out," Marissa said, "What I mean, is how does the number effect the outcome? And are there any limits to what you can wish for, or how many wishes one person can make, that you know of yet?"
"I... Don't know," I admitted. "I just saw the directions in the shop I bought this from, and they didn't say anything more than 'throw the die and make a wish.' And after my wish for a larger cup size came true, I wanted to share this with you guys."
"Well, thank you for doing that. Would you be alright if I tested this out with a couple of wishes?"
"Yeah, that's why I asked you over."
Marissa walked over to the coffee table and picked up the die.
"What are you gonna wish for?" Lucy asked. "Oh, I know, we could make ourselves all millionaires!"
"Why do that when we could just cut the middleman and wish for what we'd buy with the money?" Marissa responded. "No, if this thing really works as easily as Emma says it does, there's a lot of other things I'd like to wish for before money. But I'm gonna start small first. I wish that my hair would go back to its natural blonde, and Lucy's would go back to being a natural brunette." She rolled the die, and it stopped on 1.
I blinked a few times to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Lucy's hair turned blue, while Marissa's hair shifted to purple. It hadn't granted their wish at all! It had just made it weird!
"What?" Lucy cried, looking at a lock of her hair. "How'd that happen? I can't go out like this!"
Marissa looked a little bothered, too, but almost seemed to have expected that. "I see. I figured just granting any wish would be to easy. That's how these things usually go in those old stories. What number did you roll when your wish to go up in cup size was granted?"
"Fifteen."
"Okay. Well, we don't have a huge sample size on this thing yet, but it looks like you need a high number to grant a wish the way you want it. By the way, how did you word that wish?"
"Um... I think I just wished to be one cup size bigger."
"I guess that means that even just a fourteen or a fifteen will fully grant a wish... For now though, the only thing we know for sure is that a one seemed to completely screw up the wish... I'm just not sure how. It wasn't a huge disaster and I'm betting a one is the worst possible result, so we're probably safe making more hair wishes." She picked up the die again. "I wish that my hair would go back to its natural blonde, and Lucy's would go back to being a natural brunette." She repeated, before throwing the die again. 10.
The two girls examined their hair, watching as the wild blue and purple faded back to brunette and blonde.
"It worked this time!" Lucy cheered.
"It seems so," Marissa nodded. "And that was on the end of the lower half. This seems like pretty good odds for the wish being granted the way you mean it to. Still, I'd be careful, it may just be that different numbers either work or don't, and the number doesn't have anything to do with it."
I picked up the die again. "There's something I wanted to try, now that you're done; a little fantasy I've had for a while. I'm a little worried that if it goes right, I might not be able to lift the dice to undo it."
"I don't think that counts as being careful," Marissa said.
"I know," I said, "that's part of the reason I asked you to come here. I was hoping you two could help me get back to normal if I can't."
"I've got your back!" Lucy said. "As long as I get the next turn."
"Well, if you trusted us enough to share this with us, I don't want to disappoint you," Marissa said.
"Alright! Thank you both." I smiled. "I wish I was a fairy." I rolled the die, and it landed on a 17. The die glowed once again, and I felt a tingle all throughout my body, but especially in my shoulders.
My friends watched in surprise as I slowly began to shrink down, going below their chins, then their chests, then passing their waists, their hips, their knees... Looking down at myself, I could see my clothes were changing too, not only shrinking to match my size, but the fabrics were joining together, becoming a green dress made from leaves. I also felt a pressure in my shoulders, as two, long limbs stretched out behind me, unfurling into translucent, dragonfly-like wings. Even better, as the shrinking finally stopped, leaving me small enough to stand in their hands, I could feel... A spark, is the only way to describe it... A spark filling my mind and soul, giving me ideas on magic and pranks...
I beat my wings rapidly, lifting of the ground with ease. I was flying! Actually flying! I giggled and did a loop de loop, before rising high into the air. (Well, high for my new size. I wasn't even up at my friend's shoulder level yet.)
"This is awesome!" I cheered.
Lucy held out her hand hesitantly, and I landed on it, not seeming to weigh her down at all.
"A fairy?" Marissa asked. "Really? Why?"
"I loved stories about fairies as a kid. I thought it might be really fun to be one. Just for a little bit."
"I can't say I get it," Marissa said, "But I'm glad you're enjoying it."
"I think you look really cute like this," Lucy said.
"Thanks! One of you might want to give it a try too, flying is fun!" I lifted out of Lucy's hand, and landed on her shoulder.
"I'll think about it," Lucy said, looking at the dice. "Oh, so many things I wanna wish for... What to pick first?"
