"Well, I know this goes in movies, so first, I wish that none of our wishes will backfire horribly!" Lucy rolled the dice on the coffee table in the middle of your living room (you were gonna have to make some changes if you were gonna stay a fairy for any length of time). And.. it came up a 2.
Everyone cringed, wanting for the wish to go haywire in some demented way... except... nothing happened. As far as they could see. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
"Well..." Marissa said, "We won't really know if that worked or not until one of our wishes does backfire horribly, in which case we'll never know... Speaking of which... How about we just wish to know how the dice works?"
"What if we roll a one and it goes haywire and you forget what numbers mean?"
"Only way to know for sure..." Marissa took the dice, "I wish I knew what the rules for the dice were..." She rolled... and got a 4. She felt dizzy for a moment before saying. "Well, I don't know all the rules, but I know some, 1 means things reverse, and 20 means a wish's effect is doubled... Given that... we can assume since I rolled a 4 and din't learn the complete rules, we can assume that 2 through 19 decide the effectiveness of the wish."
"So if I wish for a million dollars, then if I roll a 1 I'll end up OWEING a million dollars?"
"What is with you and wishing for money?"
"Hey! Money can buy lots of things, and if this dice can backfire on us, I say we go for stuff that we can get WITHOUT wishing for it, and for that we need money!"
"... That's actually a good point."
"Hey! What do you mean actually?"
You giggled at your two friends' bickering, humans were so amusing. You felt an urge to simply leave the apartment and leave your two friends to the wishing dice, there were so many humans out there... unsuspecting, innocent, oblivious, all prime material for any number of pranks. You knew this had to be an affect of the wish, since you'd never cared about pranks before, let alone doing that to innocent strangers, but you really didn't CARE. But still, you knew, or at least bet on, that your friends wishes were going to be something interesting... And if not, maybe you could nudge them to wish for something amusing. Humans were so gullible after all.
Lucy had a thought... "Hey guys... we're friends right?"
"Yes! You said, I swear by Oberon himself that we're friends." You said honestly.
Marissa looked worried at your choice of words, you made a note to keep an eye on her.
"Yes Lucy, we're friends, I swear," Marissa said.
"Well... okay... I have an idea for a wish to test and... if it goes weird, I want you guys to promise you'll wish me back to normal."
Well, you didn't want to ruin your friends' trust in you, so you said, "I promise."
"I promise too Lucy, but what do you mean?"
"Just this, I wish I was made of money," Lucy rolled the dice.
She rolled an eleven.
Everyone held their breath... Lucy did not turn into a pile of currency.
Lucy breathed a new sigh of relief. "Okay, so we know the dice won't misinterpret wishes that are figures of speech..."
"That's... wow Lucy, that's actually smart of you."
"Again, what's with the 'actually'?" Lucy said with a frown.
"Sorry! I don't mean anything by it!"
Lucy said nothing and took out her iPhone... And she did some online account checking. "WOW! I'm loaded! Let me check my account history!... Hmm... It says here I was randomly chosen for a government economic stimulus package..."
"So the money didn't just pop out of thin air... that's good... at least that means we won't have the CIA pounding on your door demanding to know if you're a girlfriend to a drug lord." Marissa said.
"I didn't even think of that one." Lucy said. "I was more worried about being turned into a gold statue or something. Hard to spend yourself ya know."
You laugh. "Good one Lucy!" You give genuine praise. Marissa barely cracked a smile. "Hey girls," you added, "Just to be on the safe side, let's wish that none of our wishes can affect the others unless we want them to!"
The truth of the matter was that you didn't want them making any wishes that would affect YOU... but phrasing it that was easier, besides, you didn't need the dice to do magic on your human friends now.
"I dunno," Lucy said. "I mean, what if one of us is hit by a car and is in a coma dying? We can't exactly get a wish confirmation that way. And what if we wish to live forever and die instantly with a 1? Or it makes us never having lived at all? Then we wouldn't be able to get a confirmation that way either."
"Since when you do think this much?" Marissa finally said.
"Hey! I think plenty, blondie! And I've seen a lot of movies and TV shows about genies, leprechauns, or the monkey's paw, so I've seen how this kinda works out."
Marissa sighed. "Okay... then the real question is... who had this dice before? Why was it on sale? Why would they just give it up? And why would that place just sell something like this to someone at random? Does it have a limit number and then is gonna leave us or open a portal to hell or something? I mean, wouldn't someone wish to be king of the world with a dice like this eventually?"
"Maybe they did, and they just got greedy, and made a wish that rolled a 1 and it was like they were never king of the world after wishing to be king of the world forever?"
"The worst part is that we have no way to know that's for sure... Emma, could you lead us back to where you bought this thing? Maybe they can answer some questions."
"They didn't really seem interested in answering questions while I was there," you admit.
"Might still be worth a shot, I don't want to roll this dice for the 20th time and have it explode on us." Marissa said.
"Or it'll be gone already, that tends to happen too..." Lucy admitted.
"It's not like we lose anything but some time by going there..."
"Should we wish the dice won't leave our possession first?"
"What if it rolls on a 1 and it vanishes forever and Emma is stuck as a fairy?"
You didn't think that sounded so bad the more you think about it.
"Oh yeah," Lucy said.
