Jared trotted into the stable with Kevin still on his back. Jared went to where his former clothes, now rags lay. He snuffled through them with his nose.
Kevin asked, "What is it, boy? What are those old rags?"
They both heard a car pull into the drive way and knew from the sound that it was Dad's car. Kevin hopped off and ran to greet his father, "Oh Dad, thank you. Thank you for buying a new horse?"
"What are you talking about? I didn't buy a horse?"
"Then where'd the horse come from?"
"What horse?"
"The one in the old stable. Come on. I'll show you."
Jared turned to see his dad being led by Kevin. When his dad saw him, he said, "Jasper, is that you. It couldn't be you. It's been ten years. You'd be twenty eight by now and elderly but you look eighteen, exactly like you did ten years ago."
Jared's dad put his hand on Jared's rump tracing the Appaloosa's spot. Jared jumped at first but realized his dad was just examining Jared.
"The spot pattern is exactly the same as Jasper's the way these seven spots are bunched up right here. Where did you come from?"
Kevin said, "He was in the yard when I got home."
"Well we will have to find his owner, but later. Right now, I want to ride him like I used to."
Jared's dad made some adjustments to the saddle and Jared could tell that his dad knew exactly what to do. The saddle now fit so well that he didn't notice it as much.
Jared's dad took him out much further than Kevin had, out to a tiny lake that apparently few people knew about. There, Jared's dad stripped off for a swim. Jared had seen his dad naked but only for short periods of time such as changing at the gym. This time, Jared's dad just hung out naked. He even removed the saddle and rode Jared bareback for a while. Jared couldn't believe it but he was the horse. He found it easy and comfortable to just slip into the role of horse and forget about his role as human or even son of his rider. It felt easier to think of him as his master, owner or rider than to think of him as dad.
His dad got dressed and put the saddle back on Jared. When they got home it was getting dark. Mom was there making dinner and worrying about where Jared was but Dad assured her that Jared was old enough to look after himself. "I'm sure he'll be home for supper."
His dad lead Jared to the stable for the night but Jared insisted on snuffling his old clothes again. This time he snuffled the amulet too and turned human again.
"Jared, you were the horse? How?"
"I'm not sure. I think this amulet might have had something to do with it. I was wearing Jasper's old blanket and this amulet at the same time."
Jared got dressed and they all went to supper. During supper, Jared told them all about how he became a horse.
Jared's dad said, "You know, this could be a great opportunity. We want to get back into the horse business but our finances won't allow it at this time. If you would agree to be a horse part time, it wouldn't cost nearly as much. I'd pay you like a job instead of paying thousands for the horse and hundreds for the supplies."
Jared's mom said, "But honey, turning our son into a horse?"
Jared's dad said, "Only if he's willing. It's his choice."
Jared said, "I don't know. I'll have to think about it."
Jared's dad said, "Why don't you just give it a try for twenty four hours? You know you can always change back."
Jared agreed and after supper, he went out to the stable, stripped off his clothes and put the blanket and medallion on. Then his dad secured him for the night and went to bed.
The night was peaceful. His improved sense of smell detected pleasant odors like apple pie. He could even smell the faint smell of the female horse down the road. It wasn't a strong enough smell to drive him wild. It was just enough to tease him.
