It wasn’t much later that Mum turned up. She was angry. She chided me once she was in the house “You are on bail Jenna, Your parole condition is that they know where you are residing. You have to come home each night and you have to answer your phone when I ring. You will go to jail if you are caught breaching bail!”
Sarah asked “What does the solicitor think the sentence will be?”
“If we are lucky she will get off with a fine and no conviction recorded. But that is all dependant on a good report. Jenna needs to be contrite and apologetic. She needs to convince the doctor that she is unlikely to re-offend” She turned and looked at me “You need to get a job and appear to be a responsible member of society. Have you contacted Millicent?”
Sarah rescued me “Oh is that you friend Millicent the dentist?”
“Yes she has a vacancy for a receptionist. She said to get Jenna to give her a call and arrange an interview” ‘Mum’ turned to me “Well have you contacted her?” I must have looked confused “You haven’t I see. Well we will ring her right now. That way you can tell the psychologist that you have a job interview arranged”
‘Mum’ dialed a number and handed her phone to me. “Hello”
“Hello. It’s Jenna Mckenzie here, I would like to speak to Millicent”
“Oh hello Jenna, I was expecting you to call. Your mother said you were looking for a job and I need a new receptionist. Have you had any front desk experience?”
“A little”
“Well come around tomorrow maybe, let me look. How about 11.30 tomorrow? Bring your resume”
“Ok Thanks for the opportunity. I’ll be there at your practice 11.30 tomorrow. Bye”
‘Mum’ looked impressed “That wasn’t so hard was it” She turned to Sarah “We need to borrow some of your clothes for the appointment today. Something demure and business like”
We followed Sarah into the guest bedroom. She explained that she had taken the day off work, that she was not feeling well. Sarah looked through the wardrobe and took out a couple of outfits. “What about these?”
‘Mum’ had a look and selected a dark grey skirt with a matching jacket. “Do you have a shirt that goes with this” Sarah went to the other room. ‘Mum’ turned to me. “Remember these clothes are Sarah’s. We will be returning them to her tomorrow”
Sarah returned with two silky shirts, one black and one a light peach color. “Try the peach shirt” Mum suggested. They made no sign to leave the room so I stripped to my undies and put the shirt on. It felt like real silk. I pulled on the skirt. Mum tucked the shirt in and zipped me up at the back. She made me turn around then asked me to put the jacket on, doing up the buttons on the front. “That will do nicely, but we will need some pantyhose and shoes”
Sarah went through her shoe box and selected some beige colored shoes with a 2 inch heel. “These should do nicely” ‘Mum’ nodded her approval.
“And I bought some pantyhose with me said ‘Mum’ she pulled out a brand new pack of ‘Nude’ pantyhose and handed them to me. “Get them on then I will fix your hair”
10 minutes later I was fully dressed, my hair had been brushed and was tied up in a bun. ‘Mum’ was applying a very light pink lipstick.
“Ok I think we are ready” She looked at me with satisfaction. “We must get going Sarah, I will return the clothes dry-cleaned. Thank-you for this”
Sarah said “Jenna, you may as well wear that suit to your job interview tomorrow”. She turned to Eileen “Mum before you leave could I have a private word with Jenna”
“Certainly, I’ll be out the front. But don’t be long we must arrive on time”
Sarah bustled me into the master bedroom “You are going to have to go home with Mum after the appointment. Give me a call when you are home and I will come around. I’m going to have to stay here and see if I can find out where the medallion is”
“I’m scared for you Sarah. You saw what he did to me. Be careful”
“I’m scared as well. Go now and good luck”
