John answered, "Well, we broke from that other more famous anachronistic society. Their pageants are too superficial for us: people running around in fancy costumes made of spandex or other modern materials and speaking in faux Elizabethan English. We wanted something more authentic."
Jack looked around. There were plenty of people dressed like peasants. At previous anachronistic events he'd attended, all the women dressed like ladies and most of the men dressed like lords or at least knights. "Yea, but most people don't know how to speak in the ways of olde. I don't."
John answered, "Don't worry about it. The rule is if you can't speak authentically, don't even try. We'd rather have people speak modern English than have anyone mash up olde words. If you don't know the difference between thee and thou just say you. We don't want everyone pretending to be from the late fourteenth century. We just want those who do pretend to be from the late fourteenth century to do so authentically."
Jack said, "In other words, I can't participate. I don't have any other costume except what I'm wearing and I don't know enough about late fourteenth century to do anything authentically."
John said, "I might be able to fix that. We probably have some extra costumes. Let's head over to the organizing headquarters tent and see if we can find a role for you to play."
