Confused as to why Sam is so happy you ask, “Are you okay, or are you just really excited at the thought of spending the rest of your life as a cat?”
“Yes, I am fine, I am just happy because I think that I have found a solution. At the very least it is a hypothesis that can be tested”, Sam says as he jumps off your lap and back onto the coffee table. “My theory is that you can control the keys’ power with your mind. If you think about what you want the thing or person that you are transforming to turn into you can control the change. Such as when you changed your car, you were thinking about changing to a different kind of car and you did. Then when you got rid of Keith’s cloths I am guessing that you were not exactly thinking of the kind of cloths that you wanted him to be wearing. You were probably just thinking that you wanted him out of those cloths.”
“Yeah, I guess that makes sense, but that doesn’t explain all the other crazy transformations”, you remind Sam as you realize that his theory just may not holdup.
“My guess is that when you initially turned Keith into a dog your thoughts were not fully formed and that for some reason you had been thinking of a dog”, Sam explains as he starts to lick himself again.
“Now that I think back earlier in the day I was thinking that if I really wanted a best friend around all the time it would be cheaper to just get a dog instead of continuing to pay all of Keith’s bills. Although what about all the other changes?”
“My, guess is that after that you have just continued to have dogs and a dog’s needs in your head. As far as the family goes, your guess is as good as mine. Maybe because you pressed it out of pure panic their change was completely random.”
“Ok well what about you I definitely wasn’t think of a cat at that moment”, you say as you scratch Sam behind the ear.
“Oh, that feels so good”, Sam purrs as he enjoys your petting. “Sorry about that, it just felt so good. Anyway, you need to remember that you did not press the button when I changed, I did. That means that it was feeding off my thoughts and as I said earlier I have always dreamed of being a cat. I also probably am still able to talk because I have this deep-rooted fear of not being able to convey my thoughts and feeling.”
Ecstatic you jump up from the couch and point the keys at Sam saying, “Great so I can turn you all back to normal!”
Just before you press the button Sam hisses, “No stop!” You look at Sam confused, because he had found a solution and you wanted to get everyone’s lives back to normal. “I am sorry but first this is just a hypothesis and must be tested before it can be an established fact. We should test it and preferably on none living objects, so we do not risk killing any one.” You realize that Sam is right, so you walk across the room and grab one of Keith’s disgusting dirty t-shirts off the table. Sam rushes over to you and begins to rub up against your leg purring, “And my second point is that like I said I am enjoying being your cat, so you better not dare turn those keys on me.”
You stop for a second and wonder if the keys might have messed with Sam’s head a little, and then you remember that Sam as always enjoyed strange things. You also think you recall him telling you and Keith about his dream of being a cat back in high school, and you decide it might be nice to leave him as your and Keith’s pet. Even better you can leave Keith as your dog too and then you can stop worrying about him being a bum. You notice that this is not the first time you have considered leaving Keith as your dog today, and that every time you think of it the idea sounds better and better.
At the very least you know that you need to learn how to control the power so that you can return the others to normal. With that you pick up Sam and walk out of the apartment telling him, “We’re going to run these tests outside that way I don’t risk changing anything in my apartment.” You reach the ally next to your apartment building, drop the t-shirt on the ground and set Sam on top of a trash can. For the next ten minutes Sam has you trying to turn the t-shirt into a hat, but all you manage to turn it into is another chew toy, more dog treats, and at one point even a dog house.
The two of you stand there looking at yet another chew toy and you start to become frustrated and let out a groan. “Wow you really have dogs on your mind today”, comments Sam as he licks his paw and starts to groom himself.
“I know! This is so aggravating I just want it to become a hat already”, you yell as you click the keys and again. As the light fades you see it you have finally done it, sitting on the ground is a New York Yankees baseball hat.
You and Sam look at each other with joy in your eyes as he congratulates you, “Good job! Now the next step is turning it into something living. How about a female cat to be my girlfriend?”
You shoot Sam a disapproving look as you hear a truck door slam shut and look over to the side of the road where the animal control your land lord called has just arrived. The overweight man in his forties sees you and assumes that you are the one that called him, “Hi, sorry that I’m late! I have had a busy day, so I hear that you have two dogs for me to take care of. Are they still upstairs?” You stand there speechless as he starts to walk towards you and he spots Sam. “Oh, I see you have a cat for me to get too.”
“No wait!” you call out, but he does not stop and continues towards Sam.
He gets his hand on the back of Sam’s neck and begins to lift him up, causing you to panic. You look down at the keys in your hand and decide you have no other choice, besides you can fix it anyways because you have mastered the keys.
