A Game of Change

Toby can't stop them yet

added 19 years ago BM O

Toby was very interested in seeing what happened if they lost, come to think of it. He was deliberately trying to stop the two groups from meeting. Everyone seemed to recognise that, but nobody had any cards which would help save the situation. Noone else wanted to know the consequences of losing.
Lissi rolled the dice and moved towards Dina and Ryan. However, just as she reached them, the board changed. "You have encountered the Fountain of Truth; you shall return to normal, but be unable to hide the truth until the next phase." Lissi almost immediately changed back to her usual self.
"I suppose that means that I can't lie any more," said Lissi.
"No," said Ryan. "It says that you can't hide the truth, so you have to tell the truth instead of keeping your mouth shut. Do you think that you can handle that?"
"No, I can't. What? I didn't mean to say that - oh, that's right. The truth thing," said Lissi.
Mary, still staggering under the weight of Toby, said "Well, I might as well ask. Did you really want to play that bird card on yourself?"
Lissi stammered: "Oh please don't... yes, I did. I've always wanted to fly."
"Aren't you a little old for that?" asked Dina.
"Yes, I am. Please, stop asking these questions! They're embarassing me."
"Are you sure you don't want it?"
Lissi groaned. "I can't lie! Of course I'm sure if I say so. Now shut up and let Bob move."
Bob thought to himself. To win the phase, he needed to get out of the ground. He needed help, and Mary and Toby were the only ones close enough to be of any help. He saw a card that might help, but realised that it could easily lead to his "death". If only he could cancel out Mary's servitude to Toby...
Bob put down a card, playing it on Toby. Toby looked at it.
"CURSE: Mouthless. The victim of this curse may not use his/her mouth for two rounds. For that duration, his or her speech abilities will lower to zero."
Toby gave Bob an intense look of hatred. "Bob, what are you doing?"
Bob shrugged. "I know you're trying to jinx us, Toby. I won't be able to get you to play fair, so this was the only way I could think of getting out."
"How the hell is this supposed to help you? You're still stuck in thegggmmmmm..." Toby's lips sealed shut before melding together, forming a smooth patch of skin. Toby couldn't make any coherent noise, so he decided that he'd best shut up.
Bob placed down another card, playing it on himself. Mary managed to shake Toby off by standing up, and she read it aloud: "'CURSE: Uproot. This curse can only be played on people under plant transformations. If the victim does not reach a large body of water in the next three turns, he/she dies.' Bob, are you really sure that you should?"
"Relax," said Bob. "Look at the board. There's a river 10 squares away from you. At your speed, you can make it there with me easily. And Toby can't stop you now after that curse." He handed the dice to Mary, wincing slightly as a feeling like great thirst set in.
